Ivan stared at him like he had just declared war. "What?"
"Where's your pack, aru? Wolves come in packs, so why are you alone?" asked Yao, oblivious to the nerve he just struck. Ivan's ears lowered and his tail wrapped around his leg. He stared off into the seemingly never ending trees. Yao, suddenly becoming aware, panicked. "Oh, I shouldn't have asked that! I'm so sorry, aru!"
"No, it's fine," he gave him a sad smile. "I've always wanted to have someone to talk about this, anyways."
He looked up at the clouds and took a deep breath before telling his story.
"I used to be in a pack," he began, "We were a small pack. There were only five of us, but we were powerful. We were ruthless and we'd hunt down and kill off so many animals, sometimes we only do it for fun. Well, sometimes I only do it for fun. I had some moments of insanity while I was with them.
"The members of the pack were me, my sisters, and three other male wolves. The three others were really scared of me, and I liked that. We were living together in power. But one day, my big sister had enough of this whole 'power' thing. She told me I was losing myself in it, and she left with my little sister. I was sad, but I didn't think of it too much until the three others left me as well. I was all alone. Wolves are almost never alone, so I was scared at first. I learned to survive on my own, and I didn't kill for sport anymore. My sisters would come and see me every now and then, mostly my younger one, and I never saw those three again. I would be so happy when my sisters came together, but their visits are for only a short time and then they take their leave.
"I was all alone in this huge place. I'd hate every day that passed. I wanted to be with them again, but this time, I would be sane. I would control myself. I hated loneliness. I wanted friends, but everyone I'd meet would be terrified and flee. I was alone for so long, I had almost forgotten what it felt like to be with someone, but then, I saw someone walking down the dirt path,"
Yao chuckled a bit, knowing where that was going to go.
"I remembered the other animals talking of how humans were 'horrible creatures' and we were to stay away at all costs. But I was curious and watched. He saw me, though, and ran. He dropped something in the process, and I thought of giving it back so I can get close enough to eat him--"
"YOU WERE PLANNING ON EATING ME, ARU?!" shrieked Yao. He only noticed that now?
"You didn't know? It would be normal, since I am a wolf," he emphasized the 'am'.
Yao crossed his arms and moved away. Ivan saw this. "I won't do that anymore, I promise! Yao, please please please don't go away!" He made the most adorable puppy eyes and sad face ever. Yao saw it at the corner of his eye and couldn't help feeling bad.
"Alright, aru. But never think of trying to do that again!" He moved back and hugged his friend.
Ivan hugged back. "I won't," and with that they broke the hug and Ivan continued with the remainder of his story.
"Apparently, he turned out to be a nice boy and he became my friend! I wasn't lonely anymore, yay~!"
Yao raised his eyebrow. "What a weird change of moods,"
Ivan just smiled at him, but that smile was replaced by a serious face. "What about you?"
"What about me, aru?"
"Your family? What happened to them?"
At that moment, Yao's eyes looked like they had lost their shine. "My family...?"
Now, Ivan regretted asking, but he wanted to know. And it was payback for asking of his pack, too.
"My family," he repeated "You want me to tell you of my family, aru?" He asked him with a sad smile.
