My head felt heavy and it was pounding and throbbing continuously. Not only because Aaron had flung my head into the wall, but because I knew that I really had to have nothing to do with Luke because Aaron would always know.
I rushed through the corridor, the last bell echoing through my ears. I opened the door slowly to see everyone whispering amongst themselves as the teacher sat at the desk.
“Sorry.” I said in a hushed tone.
“Just take a seat Kalli.” She smiled weakly and ushered my to my seat.
I walked to my seat at the back of the classroom, staring into the desk as soon as I sat down. I felt a pair of eyes bore into me as I sat there: Luke’s. I knew I had no other option but to ignore him; I wasn’t going to let Aaron hurt him.
As I sat there I wondered if Luke had presumed what was happening- maybe he’d guessed that Aaron was the reason for us breaking up? But then again, what if he thought I’d chosen Aaron over him? My head began to throb even more as each thought raced through my mind. I couldn’t blame him if he hadn’t caught on; my actions seemed so unpredictable.
“Kalli?” His voice whispered. I pretended to be consumed in my work and continued to write. “Kalli!” He said slightly louder. There was no way to ignore him now.
“Oh hi.” I said meekly before looking down again. He continued to stare at me before turning back around. He glanced over his shoulder momentarily, a look of confusion on his face from what I could see.
I watched the clock, waiting for the seconds hands to join as one and for the bell to ring in my ears. I picked up my books, not even bothering to put them in my bag, before merging with the crowd of people walking out the door into the buzzing corridor.
Just as my foot stepped through the doorway I felt an arm barricade my body, making my books that I held all tumble to the floor.
“What the fuck Luke?” I asked, now becoming flustered in the empty room with just us present.
“What the fuck Luke?” He mimicked, “I should be asking you what’s wrong with you!” I just scoffed before leaning over to pick up my books.
“Kalli how did you get those bruises?” Luke’s voice was softer now as he spoke. I realised that my top had travelled slightly up as I’d leant over, revealing the bruises on my lower back where Aaron had kicked me.
I quickly tugged at my shirt but it was too late. I felt a sudden rush of guilt as I stood there, my eyes now glued to the floor.
“No Kal…” He whispered knowingly, but it was clear that he didn’t really want to say the thought that was now clear in his mind. “He did that to you didn’t he?” He asked me, his voice was completely flat. I nodded slowly, blinking hard to try and get rid of the tears.
“I finally get it.” He said, a sadistic tone heavy in his voice. “You’re with him now aren’t you?” He asked me. I simply stood there, unable to form any legible words in my brain.
“YOU’RE WITH HIM NOW AREN’T YOU?!” He shouted, louder and angrier than I’d ever heard Luke speak before.
I looked up, the tears now falling freely from my eyes.
“That’s why you broke up with me, so you could be with him. I get it Kal, I really do. But why didn’t you just tell me, why did you have to be such a coward?”
I knew this would happen, I knew that Luke would think this, but I had to let him. Because as soon as he knew, Aaron would hurt him and I could never let that happen.
