I am H. I'm afraid I can't tell you my real name, because it is forbidden. My name is something very few people know. It's too dangerous for me to just throw it out there. That might not make sense, though. I understand that people aren't usually overprotective of their name. I wasn't always like that, either.
When I was only two months old, my parents were in a car crash. They died instantly with me in the backseat. Surprisingly, I had no injuries. From there I was taken to an orphanage where they asked for people who might know or claim me. My mother's friend knew about the wreck and went to the orphanage where she gave them my birth certificate with my name on it. She wasn't able to adopt me due to financial matters, but at least they knew who I was. That was more than most of the babies dropped off there.
I was never adopted. I stayed at the orphanage until I was five years old. I went to school like a normal kid, had friends, and was a very happy child. Then, the school started to notice my abilities were far above an average five year-old girl. They gave me an IQ test. I scored above the genius rank. The orphanage wasn't surprised when they heard. My father had been an amazing detective, and my mother used to be a geneticist. Everyone expected me to be smart, though they didn't know how smart.
A few months after the IQ test results had come in, a man arrived at the orphanage. He was older with gray hair and glasses. He seemed very kind, but adults usually didn't go into the orphanage. Not many people were adopted. He asked specifically for me, not to adopt me, but to take me somewhere else.
The owner of the orphanage and him went into a separate room while I had waited outside. I heard their voices, but couldn't make out what they were saying. After a long time, the orphanage owner came out and told me to pack my things. I was being transferred to a different orphanage with the man, who introduced himself as Watari.
I moved from my orphanage in America to one in England. It was called Wammy's House. I was the third child to arrive. The first one was L, whose name I didn't know. He was eight when I first met him. I had no idea what that kid could do at such a young age. The second was B, or Beyond Birthday. He was also eight, but he had always been different. He became... corrupted. He wanted to surpass L, not become him. Beyond had been the one behind the Los Angeles BB Murder Cases.
I was sent there to learn how to become the next L. Everyone was. Once B left, I was supposed to be the one to become L if something ever happened. I was never going to become L, though. No one could be him. I learned that early on.
I am H, and I am a failure.
