After dropping off Misa at the secure location to be confined, I offered to stay and help with the interrogation. I didn't know why, but Watari immediately told me I wouldn't want to be around for what might happen. Knowing him, he was probably right, so I drove Matsuda and I straight back to headquarters to meet with the others.
We had just walked in when L asked Watari through a microphone, "Watari, has she said anything, yet?"
"No. She hasn't spoken a word," Watari reported back.
"I can't say I'm surprised. She was in shock when we dropped her off," I said, standing behind L's chair.
"Oh, hello, Hikari. I didn't realize you returned," he shifted his attention to me quickly. After he kissed me, I had really expected everything to be a lot more awkward than it had before, but it seemed we were closer and more comfortable around each other. It was making it a lot easier on us with all the other things going on around us.
I reached over him and said to Watari, "Can we get a visual on her?"
"Are you sure?" Watari hesitated. I moved next to L and crossed my arms.
"Yes. And quickly," L ordered. I gasped when the feed from the camera came onto the TV screen. Misa was in a gray room and bound to some sort of device to force her to stay standing. She couldn't move her arms or legs, and her eyes were covered.
"That's a bit... more extensive than I thought we were going to do," I managed. I felt him lay a hand on my arm, but I couldn't move my eyes from the picture on the screen.
Yagami shouted, "Ryuzaki, what's the meaning of this?"
L calmly explained, "I've apprehended her on suspicion of being the second Kira. I'm afraid this is necessary."
"Chances are Amane is guilty. There seems to be enough evidence to convict her, but all the same...." Yagami trailed off.
I finished, "If we get this wrong, we'll have ruined her whole life. We have to get this right."
L nodded, "Now, we need a confession out of her. We need to know how she kills, whether she knows Kira, and who he really is. Watari, take the necessary precautions, but beyond that, you're free to do whatever has to be done. Okay? Just make her speak."
All my alarm bells went off, "Hold on! You don't mean-"
"Very well." The screen suddenly turned off. I covered my mouth with my hand. Even though it was very likely that she was the second Kira, if she wasn't, then we were about to scar her for life. We'd be the criminals. Torture wasn't allowed in Japan, as in most countries.
"We wouldn't do anything that wasn't needed," L assured me. I only nodded. "Oh, Mr. Yagami?"
"Huh?" he asked.
L revealed, "Light has now become a prime suspect, and I'm probably going to bring him in for interrogation as well. Please, be prepared for that."
Quickly, I stepped in, "But we're waiting a few days. Hopefully, Misa will talk before it resorts to that." I hated that I was giving false hope. If she truly was the second Kira, then she'd never give up Kira's name. This had all been a huge risk, and I had a feeling that last part wouldn't pan out well.
It had been three days, and Misa never spoke a word. I wasn't sure what she was going through, but I hoped it wasn't too horrible. I think everyone did.
Finally, Watari told us, "Ryuzaki, Hikari, Amane is talking." L jumped off the couch that we had been lying on and ran to the TV. I immediately followed suit.
