Footsteps got quieter until they died away completely. I sat up slowly and peeled off the device on my chest that shocked me. I groaned at the burn mark it left. L kneeled next to me, "Are you alright, Harper?" I threw it at him, and it hit him in the cheek. By his reaction, he seemed to have anticipated that.
"That hurt, you idiot! You said it was a heart rate measurer!" I accused angrily, still feeling aftermaths of the pain that sent me to the ground. I couldn't stop shaking. I couldn't believe he electrocuted me!
"It was going to look better if you were surprised by it. Sorry," he apologized. "The effects will wear off shortly."
We had briefed everyone on the situation, as well as showing them the proof of Misa being the second Kira. Yagami was to be sent away with the Death Note for a fake experiment. The others would leave in order to accompany him to the heliport, but they would never leave the building, and Yagami would drive somewhere not too far off. They would go to a room to watch the cameras, and Yagami would watch from a laptop. It was hard convincing him, but as soon as he saw that L wrote his name in the Death Note, he knew we were serious. You couldn't deny someone their dying wish. Also, shortly after that, I had punched L multiple times for being such an ass to me, not that it hurt him much. It just made me feel better.
L explained to me later in that day, "You're going to have to wear a heart rate monitor on your finger. It will give you a slight squeeze when it's about to flat line. That's when you'll fall. I have a button on my own that I will press to activate yours." He showed me the finger holder.
"How will you know when?" I wondered, fitting it on my finger.
"I suspect it won't be difficult to figure out. Just trust me to do it."
"Alright, that won't be a problem," I nodded, setting the monitor back on the table.
"But you also need to wear this from now on," he added, opening his palm to show a circular device no larger than a nickel. I took it and noticed its sticky backing. "It's a mobile monitor that connects to the computers."
"Alright. I'll put it on now," I complied beginning to unbutton my shirt. When he hadn't moved, I raised an eyebrow, "Do you mind turning around?"
L blushed, "Oh... right. Sorry." He then turned to face the other way.
As quietly and quickly as I could, I opened the Death Note and found the page with his name written on it. When he heard a pen click, he whipped around, "Wait a minute, Hikari!" I had already written my name. I glanced up at him and could easily see the internal battle he was having. Of course, the knee-jerk reaction was to take the pen from my hand, but then I'd just die of a heart attack. He had to wait until I was done.
I placed the pen down on the paper and took a deep breath. I just signed away my life. "You tricked me. The whole point was to keep you alive!" L shouted.
"I told you when we let Light start working with us. I don't want to be around to see the world without you in it. I've been compromised."
