After only two days of surveillance, L and I agreed that we were not going to find anything in either household and decided to remove the cameras and wiretaps. Kira continued to kill without anyone showing they were the culprit. Still, we knew Kira was smart. He wouldn't slip up so easily. I also spoke of the godlike position I thought he had placed himself in with L. That was the easiest explanation that made sense as to why no one was displaying the signs of guilt of someone who had committed murder. He agreed it was a possibility.
He still believed that the families had a five-percent chance of holding Kira. My guess had dropped to fifteen-percent. Maybe I was a wishful thinker, but it didn't matter. There was something about the Yagamis that was too perfect. Especially Light. I didn't even care about the bet. He was just genuinely suspicious.
I went back to tracking heart attack victims with the rest while L stayed slightly away from me for a day. I wasn't sure why. We weren't fighting; he just seemed a little too secretive. After the police were gone and I was cleaning up, I found out why.
I removed a folder about one of the Kitamuras to find a packet hiding underneath it. I picked it up and asked, "Hey, Ryuzaki? Why do you have an application for To-Oh University?"
He called from the kitchen since he was making a snack, "I'm going to be taking the entrance exam on the twenty-fifth."
I frowned, "Why? You don't exactly have the time to be taking classes."
He came walking back in with a box of pumpkin spice cookies, strawberry jam, and a spoon. "It's for the investigation. I figure the only way we're going to catch Kira is if I get close enough to him to find out who he is. Don't you recognize the name?" He sat back in his chair and began opening the box.
I studied the name again and shrugged, "I guess. I don't know. There are a lot of college kids around here. I probably heard or saw the name while on a grocery run." He pulled out the sleeve of cookies and dropped the box on the ground. I sighed and picked it up, walking over to the trash can.
L told me as I put the box in the garbage, "Light Yagami will be taking the entrance exam the same day there. I will attend college with him in order to gain his trust and find out if he is Kira." While I had my back turned to him, he had opened the large jar and taken out all of the cookies. He began eating one as I turned back and crumbled the rest of them into the jar.
I paused, too confused about his actions to have the appropriate reaction to the news, "Why are you putting them in the jam?"
"I don't think it's a bad idea."
"You know I use that jam for my toast every day. Why would you do that?"
"I wanted to try something new," L said as he took a spoonful into his mouth after mixing it together. "It's quite delicious. Do you want some?" I crossed my arms as I walked over to him. After bending over to his height and opening my mouth, he stuck the spoon in. I pulled back, taking the mixture into my mouth and prepared to run to the trash can to spit it out. I had the right to be skeptical. He made some strange combinations sometimes....
My eyes widened as I swallowed and gasped, "You're right! That's really good!"
He bargained, "I'll share it with you if you give me the brownie recipe."
I laughed, "It's not that good, Ryuzaki. Sorry." He frowned, disappointed. Still, he decided to share with me, which was a little strange. He didn't like sharing too much. I wasn't going to question it, though. I grabbed another spoon from the kitchen and sat next to him, eating the jam with him.
"Anyways, are you sure you want to do this?" I asked, going back to our previous conversation. I tried to hide my anxiety over the ordeal. That was usually when he started to shut me out. I had to have some control or I definitely wouldn't be able to get him to listen to my concerns.
