There was nothing better than hearing everything was over. We still had to find out how Kira killed, but the hardest part was done with. We had done the one thing we so desperately needed to. We captured our killer.
"Ryuzaki, Hikari, please let me go and make the arrest," Yagami requested us.
"I understand, but remember, this is Kira. Be sure to take every precaution when you approach him and don't allow him to see your face. Watari, if Higuchi tries anything or makes any sudden moves...."
Watari finished for him, "Understood. I will shoot to stop him, not to kill."
The police officers moved in, and Higuchi cooperated with them by getting out of his car. They quickly restrained and blindfolded him. "Mogi, I want you to put a headset on him as planned."
"Roger," Mogi replied.
As he did so, L reminded me, "Don't say a word during this conversation, H. I can't afford that kind of mistake."
I nodded, "I promise, I'll control myself."
As soon as the headset was on, L interrogated, "Higuchi, how are you able to kill people?" He waited a moment, but Higuchi stayed quiet. "Tell me!" During this pause, he grabbed the furnace and teacup we had brought with us. As he poured the tea, he threatened, "If you are not going to talk, I'll use whatever means necessary to get it out of you."
I kept my lips pressed tight together as I saw Higuchi's composure change. He hesitated, "The notebook." What?
"Notebook?"
"You probably won't believe me, but I've got a special notebook. If I write someone's name in it while thinking of their face, that person dies," Higuchi revealed.
I wanted to say that it was a hoax because it was just that ridiculous, but there was too much that fit. The second Kira had mentioned showing her notebook to the real Kira in Aoyama a while back. Plus, the fact that he wrote Matsuda's name in said notebook and expected him to die was enough evidence to show that was the case. I hadn't expected to be right about that when I first said it. Then again, I didn't believe in the supernatural, either, but there was no other way to describe the notebook.
"Mr. Yagami," L said. I saw Mogi switch off the headset on Higuchi.
"Yeah, I found it," he told us. He sat inside the car. "It was in one of the compartments of Higuchi's bag. He has written a lot of names, but there doesn't seem to be anything else unusual about it. Huh?"
I asked, "What's wrong?" He suddenly screamed and fell out of the car, dropping the book.
"What is it, Mr. Yagami?" L repeated.
"It's a monster!" Yagami shouted, reaching inside his blazer.
"Please, calm down. Don't panic. Remember, you're not currently armed to defend yourself," L pointed out.
