Leila
I look up as the clock reads 8:45 pm.
Why did I agree to teach tonight?
Rubbing my temple, I exhale deeply before picking up the phone. Scrolling through my contacts, I tap the first name that pops up. After a couple of rings, I hear Ant's smooth voice.
"Wuzzam?"
"Hey, is everything okay?"
He sighs, "Baybeh, everything is the same as it was when you left here an hour ago. Kay and the boys are eating, Mel and Que are practicing with Ju and Casey, and Lou is reading with Ciara."
"I was just checking in since my class starts in fifteen."
"I know; I know. Just do me a favor and don't push ya'self too hard. You got a lot on ya' plate and the last thing I need is for somethin' to happen ta' ya."
"Baby, I promise that I'll be fine. By the way, what time do you get off tomorrow?"
"Around 6, why?"
"Would you mind picking up some things for me for the boys' birthday party? I'll pay you back."
"Lei, I got it."
"I'm deadass, just let me know how what I owe you."
"Leila, hush," he chuckles.
I roll my eyes and laugh, "Fine, I'm not even about to start with you. I'm gonna go get ready."
"Aight, have fun. Don't be doing no grown shit, either. Ion' wanna have to come down there."
"Boy, your lazy self is not leaving that couch. Goodbye."
"Leila, don't get ya ass in trouble."
"Bye, Ant," I respond before hanging up the phone.
Rising from my desk, I peel off my jacket and hang it up by the door. I sway through the hall, my heels clicking against the wooden floor with each step. I turn the corner, spotting the flow of young women coming through the door. A sea of caramel, bronze and ebony skin is lined up at the front desk, signing in. The music from the other room is bouncing off of the walls, indicating that Dom's class has already begun.
I slip off my shoes and put on a pair of grip socks. The breeze caresses my shoulders as I put my knee pads on one at a time. I spot Tia and Draya conversing with a figure near the door, but I pay it no mind. Finishing up, I walk over to my speaker and plug my phone into the aux. I then turn around and face the swarm of students.
"Hi, everybody. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Leila and I am the co-owner of this studio along with my best friend, Tia."
They all clap while some turn to find her.
