*Junior's POV.*
We finally arrive at the clinic.
"Help!" I call. "What happened?" Nurse Adams asks running over. "I don't know. I was just talking to her a-and she just collapsed." I say. Breath James, breath. I say in my head.
"Come with me." Nurse Adams says. "Put her in the second room." She tells me. "Go get your hand taken care of and then I'll let you know what is going on." She says. Nurse Williams bandages my hand. Am about to leave when Joe walks in.
"Junior, you haven't seen my sister have you?" He asks. I blank for a second. "I haven't seen her since dome day." He says. "Angie? I saw her a couple nights ago." I lie. "Really? Where?" He asks. "I don't know around." I say. "Anything else little man?" I ask. "I guess not." He says. But now that I think about it. He might know what's going on with Katie.
"Actually, um have you noticed anything weird happening with Katie Hart lately?" I ask. He hesitates for a moment. "Well, her headaches are pretty bad but other than that she's fine. Why?" He asks. "I was talking to her and she collapsed for no reason at all." I tell him. "What? is she OK?" "Honestly, I don't know." I say. I'm worried about her. I'm losing Angie, I can't lose her too. I see my dad walk in.
"Junior, what are you doing here?" He asks. I tell him what happened with Katie. And he tells me the same thing happened to Linda.
"You feel OK?" He asks. "Yeah, fine." I say. "We need help!" I hear Nurse Adams call. "More people are coming in with fever and headache." She says. "So what are we dealing with?" Barbie asks walking up to us. We glare at each other for a moment.
"I don't know. It could be the flu. We need more cots. There in the basement." She says. "I'll get them." Barbie says. "Junior go help Barbie." My dad says.
"Shouldn't I stay here, to make sure Katie is OK?" "Just go help out. I'll let you know when we figure out what's going on." I nod. Just then Julia Shumway walks pushing Phil Bushey on a stretcher. "He passed our. What happened to Linda?" She asks.
"Same thing that happened to Katie, I guess." I tell her.
"Junior, you coming?" Barbie asks. "Yeah," I say. We go down to get the cots from the basement. "What are you doing here anyway?" He asks me. "It's not really your business but I brought a friend of mine in. Katie Hart. She said knew her." I tell him. We bring the cots up and almost immediately we run into Julia. "I just brought in a friend of yours, Phil Bushey." She says. Hmm. That's interesting. I think. Apparently Barbie has never been to Chesters Mill before, so how does he know Phil. I knew he was hiding something.
"Go on ahead I'll catch up." Barbie says. I smirk and keep walking.
After I finish setting up the cots I walk back to the lobby and start handing out water to everyone. I see my dad. "Dad, what the hell is going on?" I ask. "Some kind of an outbreak." He says.
"Doctor, any idea what's going on here?" He asks. "I think it could be meningitis." She says.
"Oh, my cousin had that. Its bad. One minute he was fine and then the next minute he was dying." Barbie says.
"I got vaccinated when I went to college. So I'm good." I say.
"Yeah I got mine in the military." Barbie says. "My family got vaccinated as well. Dr. Calvert tells us. "But for everyone else it's just going to get worse. I think we may have an epidemic on our hands." She says. "An epidemic? How contagious is it?" My dad asks. "Very, if one person coughs, it spreads. And I just checked. We don't have enough antibiotics to treat all of these people." She says.
"Dee's Pharmacy has to have some." Barbie says. "Listen doctor. Give me a list of what you need." My dad says. "Let me be absolutely clear. If these people leave and it spreads.." she trails off. "Well, we're gonna make sure it doesn't." My dad says. He goes to his car and grabs a shot gun.
"I got the list you wanted from Dr. Calvert." I say handing it to him. "Thanks," He gives me the gun. "Go inside guard the door. Nobody leaves you understand?" He asks. "What? Like a quarantine?" I ask. "Call it what you like but no one leaves." He repeats. "I'm counting on you Junior." He says. I go inside. "The clinic is now closed. Nobody leaves." I say. The towns people turn to me and begin to murmur.
"No one."
