*Katie's POV.*
I've been looking for Joe and Norrie everywhere but I can't find them anywhere. Calm down Katie. Alice and Carolyn probably already got them down in the tunnels. I try to reassure myself. It's 15 minutes until the bomb hits. We all were supposed to be in the tunnels a long time ago. I quickly run to my house.
I grab my duffel bag and put a few things in it. A picture of me, my mom, and my aunt Lilly. A picture of my grandparents. A photo of me and Juni when we were little. My camera. (I take a lot of photos.)
Another set of walkie-talkies. The town could always use more.
"Koko! Here girl!" I call. No answer. I hope I can find her.
I check my watch. 15 minutes.
Then Koko comes running down the stairs. "Hey, good girl. Yeah come on we gotta go." I say.
"Katie, Katie you there?" I hear Big Jim come over one of the walkie's. "Hey Jim." I say knowing he'll be pissed. "Damn it Katie. Why aren't you at the cement factory yet?" He asks.
"Relax, I'm on my way." I say.
"Is my son with you?" He asks.
What? "No, w-why would he be with me? Is he not there?" I ask worried. "No he's- look just get here." He says. "Copy that. But not until I find Juni." I say.
"Wait Katie! You don't undersa-" I turn off the walkie. I don't care what Jim says. I need to find my best friend. Actually I'm surprised Jim isn't out here looking for him.
"Koko," I say. "Go to the cement factory OK?" I tell her. I know most people would think it was weird that I am saying that to a cat. But she is the most intelligent cat I have ever met. She knows Chesters Mill like the back of her paw. If she leaves now she'll make it. She meows in response and put my bag down and open the door. She runs out and down the street. I hope she makes it.
I need to find Juni. The run as fast as I can to his house. Once there I immediately start calling his name. "Junior! Junior!" I yell. I find his door is unlocked. I run inside. "Hello? Juni are you here?" I yell. "Juni! Junior! Junior!" Still no answer.
I look all over the house for him. Nothing. I run back outside and go check his bomb shelter. That would probably be a good place to take cover. Surprisingly, it's unlocked as well. Strange. I run down the stairs and open the other door.
"Juni!" I call out. He's not in there. No one is. The place looks like it flooded and was just recently drained. I sit on the cot and check my watch. 8 minutes.
I notice chains on the floor. But I don't think anything of it.
There is no way I'm gonna find him in time. "Oh James," I say.
I look at my watch. I can't I almost found out who my father was. Now I'll never know. 6 minutes.
My mother told me to be brave. She always told me to be strong.
If this bomb shelter does hold. I'll be stuck down here and probably eventually die.
I walk back out if the bomb shelter and run to the factory.
"Katie!" I hear a familiar voice call. No. I think. I turn around, and see Ben running over to me.
"I've... been looking... for... you everywhere." He says completely out of breath.
"What are you doing out here?" He asks. "Never mind what I'm doing out here. What the hell are you going out here?" I yell.
"Big Jim said you were out here. So I came out here too find you." He says. I can't believe he came out here risking his own life for me. Why? Then I think back to what Norrie said.
He likes you. Was she right?
"Also I was hoping Joe and Norrie would be with you." He says. What?!?! "Wait aren't they in the cement factory?" I ask.
"No. No one can seem to find them." He says. "But that doesn't make any sense. Why wouldn't they be there?" I ask. But then it hits me. Probably the same reason Junior isn't there.
"They went back for Angie." I say. "Come on," I say as we begin to run.
"Stop." I say. "What? No, we have to keep going." He says.
"There's no point. 60 seconds before that bomb hits." I say.
"So what do we do?" He asks. "I-I don't know." I say looking at at the sky. "If you hadn't come to find me you'd be fine." I say.
"Yeah but, I'm glad I did." He says. I feel his hand gently grab mine. I look down at our hands. I interlock our fingers. He looks up at me in surprise. What did I have to lose?
*Benny's POV.*
I went out to find Katie, because I love her. And if we're gonna die. I want to be with her. I found her but we were too late to make it back to the factory.
Should I tell her how I feel? I don't know. I grab her hand and our fingers lock. I look at her in surprise. She shrugs. I look into her beautiful blue eyes. I'm glad they will be the last things I see before I die. She turns away and looks at the sky. I do the same. I see the missile coming towards us.
*Katie's POV.*
I may not know who my father is. Or if Junior and the otheres make it out alive. But at least I won't die alone. I have Ben with me. Here comes the missile. This is it.
