Chapter 14
"You excited?" Violet asked.
I shrugged. "Eh, kind of. I mean, it is my first actual gig here and I'm getting paid to perform. But it's nothing special."
"Nothing special?" Violet asked. "Hunter, it's your first gig here. You're going to do great."
"Thanks," I said. "And thank you for coming. I'm going to need all the support I can get."
"You're welcome," Violet said with a smile. "And you don't need any support. Like I said, you'll be amazing. I already watched you perform before and I know you love it."
She had a point. As much as I didn't want to be known as Austin Bolton's son, I loved performing. There was just something about it that made me feel like I was at home. I couldn't help but follow my dad's footsteps.
"Ladies and gentlemen," one of the workers said. "It is an honor to have me introduce the new performer here. We finally found someone to replace the band that quit and we know a lot of you will love the new performer. So, please give a welcoming applause to Hunter Bolton!"
Violet quickly gave me a hug while the people who were gathered around the stage cheered. "Good luck, Hunter!"
"Thanks," I said before grabbing one of the microphones and heading onto the stage. "How's everybody doing tonight?" I got a positive feedback from the audience, making me smile. "Great! So, I was going to write a song for today, but it was harder than I thought. I wasn't able to do it, but I promise I'll have something new for you all next Saturday. For today, I will be singing a couple songs you probably know if you know exactly who I am."
I gave the sound guy a thumbs up, and he started the backing track from one of my dad's hit songs. I really did want to start my own future and singing my dad's songs only gave everyone another excuse to compare us. I really hoped I would be able to write a couple songs son before the comparisons get too big.
Even though I didn't want to sing my dad's songs, performing them still gave me that awesome feeling. For once, I felt like I belonged somewhere. I didn't have to worry about what other people might think or worry I wouldn't fit in. I knew I did.
For the next hour, I sang and sang and sang. By the time my gig was over, my throat was a bit sore, so I was thankful when Violet handed me a bottled water. "Thanks," I said before opening the lid and drinking about 3/4.
"Wow," she said. "You must have been really thirsty."
"Unbelievably," I said. "Still, I loved it. Thank you do much for convincing me to do this. It's actually what I want to do."
"Of course," Violet said. "I knew how much you really loved it, so I wanted to help you realize that."
As a thanks, I pulled her into a hug. That and I was actually able to hold her in my arms for a bit. I loved how the top of her head just reached my chin, allowing me to rest it there. "Thank you," I said again. "Really."
Violet hugged me back. "You're welcome."
"Want to go to a diner, or something?" I asked. "I'm starving and I'm really not in the mood for greasy, deep-fried food."
Violet pulled away, looking up at me and smiling. "Yeah, I'm kind of hungry too. There's a diner right across the street, actually. We can head there."
"Great," I said. "Let's go there. And by the way, I'm paying."
I began walking there with Violet hurrying to keep up with my pace. "Come on, I can't let you pay every time we eat together. I can pay for myself."
