Chapter 18
"Come on, Hunter," Violet said. "You have to concentrate."
"It's too confusing," I said.
"I know," Violet said. "It took me a long time to understand it."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Really? But you're the top student at school."
"Trust me, it took me a lot of studying," Violet said. "My school work is taken as serious as your music. My parents want me the go to a really good university."
I sat up from my laying position on the hammock in my backyard. "Is that what you want?" I asked.
Violet shrugged. "I don't know. I mean, all my life I've been studying extremely hard and I've been dreaming of going to one of the best schools in the country, but lately....I don't know. I've been thinking how it might not be my actual dream and how my parents might have kind of forced the dream on me."
"So what do you really want to do?" I asked.
"I never really thought about it," Violet said. "Here I am, in grade eleven, not knowing what I want to do after high school."
"It's fine, Violet," I said. "I don't even know what I want to do after high school."
"What about your music?" Violet asked.
"I doubt that I can make a living off of my music," I said.
"And why not?" Violet asked. "Isn't that what your parents do?"
I sighed. "Yeah, but....I really love music, you know that. I don't want people comparing me to my Dad, though. And I really don't want everyone thinking I'm doing what I do because of who my parents are."
"They won't," Violet assured. "Remember that little boy, Zander? He asked for your autograph. He never said anything about your parents. Only you."
I gave her a small smile. "That's true. You know, you always know what to say to make me feel better." I brushed a strand of hair out of her face before leaning down and pressing my lips on hers. She rested her hand on the back of my neck, kissing me back with the same amount of passion I was giving her.
A loud shrill caused us to pull apart. "Sorry," I said, pulling my cell phone out of my pocket. I answered the phone. "Hello?"
"Hunter Bolton?" a man on the other line said.
"Yeah, that's me," I said. "Who is this?"
"My name is Kevin Millington," he said. "I'm the owner of Cold Sonic Entertainment. I saw you performing at the carnival yesterday and I would like to offer you a contract with my recording studio."
My eyes widened at that. "Seriously?! That's amazing!"
"Do you think you can come in tomorrow at noon?" Kevin asked. "I'd like to meet with you and have you perform a demo of an original song."
"Yeah, I can make it," I said.
"Great," Kevin said. After giving me the address and me getting Violet to write it down, he hung up.
"Who was that?" Violet asked. "And why did you need this address?"
"That was a man named Kevin Millington," I said.
"Wait," Violet said, sitting up as well. "Isn't he the owner of Cold Sonic Entertainment?"
I nodded. "He said he wants to offer me a contract."
"No way!" Violet said. "That's amazing!"
"Yeah," I said. "He wants to meet with me tomorrow and have me perform a demo of an original song. To make things better, it's not even the record label my parents are signed to. There's no way people could say I got it because of my parents."
"Congrats, Hunter," Violet said, giving me a hug. "See what happens when you want something so bad, you'll try to get it?"
"It's not official yet," I said. "I still have to meet with him and perform a demo. Hopefully I get it, though. It will be amazing to have a record deal."
Violet gave me a smile. "I'm really happy for you. Now...." She picked up my chemistry textbook. "Back to studying."
"No," I whined, laying back down. "That's lame. I'm about to die from the lameness."
"Come on, Hunter," Violet said. "You are doing way better than from when I first started tutoring you. Just a few more questions, then we're done for the day."
I sighed. "Fine. Hit me."
"What is the formula for pentane?" Violet asked.
I really hated chemistry, but I knew that if I was going to pursue music, my parents would want me to get good grades, meaning I actually have to try in school now.
I took a deep breath before getting my brain to start working. "Is it....C5....H....12?"
Violet smiled widely. "It is exactly that."
Violet asked me a few more questions and I got them all right, which surprised me. I never thought I would actually understand chemistry. It was so complicated to me because of my dyslexia, but Violet knew exactly how to tutor me.
"There," Violet said, closing the textbook. "I think you're all ready for the test on Monday."
"You know what, I think I am," I said. "Thanks for tutoring me, Vi. I'm actually understanding everything."
"You're welcome," Violet said.
"Want to help me with the demo?" I asked. "I've been working on a song and I want your opinion on it."
"Of course," Violet said. "I guarantee you'll get the record deal tomorrow."
"But you haven't even heard the song," I said.
"I don't have to," Violet said. "I've seen all your performances at the carnival. I already know how talented you are. You will get that record deal."
It was times like those where I loved having Violet as my girlfriend. She always knew what to say to me. She was an amazing girl.
"Alright," I said. "Come on, let's go to the music room."
Violet raised an eyebrow. "You have a music room?"
"It's the Boltons we're talking about here," I said. "Of course we have a music room. Now, let's go, darling."
Violet rolled her eyes. "I'm coming, I'm coming."
