A Population of Wizards

Sola is the largest state in the country of Magicalian. It is where I grew up. My name is Sola, named after the state. As a child, I lived on a farm. The usual kind, with corn and cows and a big farmhouse. My favorite part of the farm was the horse barn. I never learned how to ride, though. One day I went over to the horse barn and pet my favorite horse out of all five. It was a white horse with black spots that was clearly not brushed or washed for a while. I called it Magic.

I talked to Magic a lot. She was the only one to talk to besides my father, who was too busy trading. Two years before my mom had died of cancer. Now our family is falling apart. My brothers, Soa and Asku, went to college for magic. I don't have to worry about magic or college yet, not until I'm thirteen. That will be towards the the end of this year. I can't wait to learn my kind and find out what it is.

There are seven different kinds of magic: weather, fire, earth, water, plants, animals, and dragons.

There's one more thing you need to know. Each kind has a king or queen. It just keeps everything under control. Weather wizards control the weather, but will get arrested by not following the rules of Airia, weather's queen. Fire wizards start and end fires, under Fla's power. He is the harshest king in Magicalian. Earth controls volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, etc. under power of Quake. Water does not create floods as it would seem, they create rain and can cause droughts. Their queen is Rivar. Plant wizards produce crops and are usually farmers, and can make them grow much faster. Plant wizards are usually the ones with the least power. {I think you know why.} The plant queen is Sunflow. Animal wizardry is hard, because you need to know every animal and if you would be considered prey to it. But you can create new species and destroy others. The king is Eagl. Dragon wizards are lucky. They can do anything an animal wizard can do, and a lot more. They can also own a small dragon if the queen thinks they will be responsible enough. The only downside is that you have to go to a sort of college. Basically to learn all about dragons, how to take care of them, and what type is best for everyone. The queen is very nice and lets her wizards do anything and go anywhere with their dragons. She also lets them pick their very own. Her name is Drai.

I sit down on an old stool and start to think. Soa's kind is weather and says that Airia is kind of mean. I don't think I want weather, anyways. Asku is an earth wizard. He says that Quake is nice. But how can a king like Quake be nice when he controls volcanoes and floods? I wouldn't be a good earth wizard, I'm too nice to other statesfolk, and too afraid of floods myself.

"The only kinds I would like are animal and dragon, but I probably won't get dragon. I'm too..." I stopped to think for a second. "Too much like me," I said, looking at Magic. "And if I get either one, I promise not to take away horses." I stood up and held out my hand as if Magic would shake it for a deal. I was completely shocked when she lifted her hoof. "I promise," I said, smiling like I finally found a friend.

The next few months had been horrible. My father had given me even more chores to do each day. Clean the dishes, feed the cows, geed the horses, blah, blah, blah. But each day got closer to my birthday. Each year on January 1st, there was a meeting held to determine each new thirteen year-old's kind. Finally, after months of chores, it was my birthday, and I got a packet for the meeting, which was in five days. I was excited, of course, but was surprised when my father handed me a gift. I slowly tore the wrapping paper off of the small box. It was something he had received from trading, a time telling device called a wat, probably from Ace {a neighboring country}. I set it on my shelf and put an unlit candle next to it for protection from the Magicalian gods and goddesses. The night before the meeting, I couldn't sleep. I was too busy thinking about the magic while watching my wat from my bed.
