My alarm clock went off. it didn't matter, because I had already been awake. Tya was up and ready to go in five minutes. She was waiting for me so we could eat breakfast together. I got dressed, brushed teeth, and sat down with my bowl of cereal.
"Happy now, Tya?"
"Yes," she replied with a big smile.
While we ate our breakfast, Tya kept talking. She was probably telling me stories. I wasn't paying too close attention. I was too busy wondering about something. There were four beds in each room, as far as I know. But Tya and I were the only ones staying in room 143. Were the other two planning to come early today? Or is there no 'other two'? I snapped out of the thought when I saw that Tya looked worried.
"Sola? Did you get too little sleep? I'm sorry if I woke you up too early. You can close your eyes until we need to leave."
I yawned, probably at the wrong time. "I think I'll be okay."
"You sure?" She giggled. "I always wake up early at home. I love to watch the sun rise."
At that point, she turned to look out the window across the room. I just stared at my cereal and silently kept eating. Maybe tonight I will get more sleep. I can never be too sure about that.
Tya and I finished our breakfast and walked out the door with our books piled into our arms. Tya only chose the books that she needed. I chose all of the books. You never know what will be on the final tests.
We had been walking for a long time, and my legs grew tired. I told Tya about it, so she helped me find a bench and we sat down for a couple seconds. We began to watch people walking by. Some had worried looks on their faces as they ran through the small crowd. Others were laughing, but were nof moving at all. I guess those groups will be the ones late to class each day. Then there were the people that calmly kept walking, without caring about anyone else in the world. Actually, there was only one person like that. She wore very high heels, and a professional outfit. She looked almost like a teacher. But the way she walked, pushed people out of her way, and acted like she was the only person that anyone should care about, told me that I will have a problem with her and her attitude.
"Let go. Class will be starting in a couple minutes," I say.
"Okay." Tya followed me close behind.
We got up and left the bench. I quickly realized that I am probably walking closer and closer to one of the most stressful, but fun, times of my life.

The classroom was clean, since it was the first day for the school year. Supplies were neatly lined up on shelves and tables, and books were placed perfectly on bookshelves. So far, I was excited. Everything was working out perfectly.
The only thing I would change is the seating. Tya is almost twenty seats away from me, and I have to sit in between two guys. One thinks he is the coolest person with his leather jacket. The other sits there in silence, reading a stupid looking book. I really hate seating charts.
I take out my notebook, ready for scribbling down anything that sounds important.
I wonder if Dad would say "You're my daughter, alright" now, because of the way I am acting. I hold on to that memory of his voice, until another interrupts me. It's deep, and sounds strange, like they had just gotten over a cold. I look up to see a short man standing in front of the class. My new teacher.
"Okay, class. I know you are excited to be here, but please shut up."
The room fell silent.
Some random kid blurted out, "Why would a teacher tell us to shut up?"
He looked into the crowd close to where the sound of the kid's voice came from. "It worked. Didn't it?"
I laughed a little, and the student next to me shot me an angry glance. I sat back further in my chair. The student turned his attention back to the teacher, who continued his introduction.
"My name is Mr. Cadei, and I will be your magic teacher. I will expect you to be quiet at all times and look with your eyes. Not your hands. In other words, don't touch anything unless I tell you to. You shall also get all of your homework done on time. Worksheet corrections will be given to me no more than two days after the original due date. If and when you get a dragon, it is expected to be next to you every single second, even outside the classroom. If it dies, it dies. Any questions so far?"
Everyone stared at Mr. Cadei in silence.
"Kay. Good. Find a partner and get started. No books for this one, and no questions because it's a pretest. It's based on what you already know."
He put a large pile of papers on the table in the middle of the room and sat down at his desk. Confused, everyone looked at each other. But they got up, and took a paper. I saw Tya walking towards the table, so I grabbed two and handed one to her.
"Do you wanna work together?" I asked.
"Why wouldn't I?"
We ended up sitting at my desk, and she sat in the one next to me.
"Okay, first question," I said. The question was:
1.) When was the Dragon kind founded?
"Ummm, do you know, Tya?"
"No idea."
"Then we guess," I said, disappointed in our knowledge about our own kind.
The rest of the pretest continued like that. We barely knew most of the questions. Some were obvious, but I'm pretty sure we failed. Once everyone handed it in, Mr. Cadei ended class.
"I will grade all of these tonight. Have a great rest of the day."

It was only 6:24, and Tya and I had gone out to eat for lunch after class. All day I've been worrying that I would fail. Failing means no dragon, and not having a dragon is very bad. I just keep hoping the pretest won't count for the final grade, that the test is the only thing actually graded. But all I can do is hope.
