First Day in Ever

I practically jumped out of bed, ignoring the sound of my alarm clock. I threw on the first clothes I saw and headed out my bedroom door.

Dad had probably left around midnight, since it took a long time for him to get where he needed to go. I finished my cereal way too quickly, because it was only 7:30. More time for reading, I guess. My journey back to my room took a sudden halt, as I spotted an unfamiliar sticky note on the fridge. It read:

           Sola,

Have fun in Ever. I hope you become a strong Dragon kind, and make new friends along the way. I wish I will be able to see you sometime in the future, stronger and happier than you are now.

                                                                                                                                                         Love,

                                                                                                                                                               Dad

I smiled, neatly folding the note and sticking it in my suitcase when I got back in my room. Me too, Dad. I wish to be stronger and happier, too.

I found my book and opened to the marked page, and I was pleased by the sound of the old pages crinkling as it opened. I read until I finished the book. The ending was exactly how I wanted it to be, and I stretched my arms. I glanced at the clock. 11:32. Right on time. I dragged my suitcase out of my room, and stopped to close my door for no particular reason. I took it outside and sat on the porch, cold from the fall temperatures. The morning seemed happy for me. Birds chirped, wind blew my hair slightly, and the sun was shining just enough. It was unusual for a fall day, but I couldn't complain. Sooner or later, I would be living in the dorms in Ever, one of the warmest places around.

No less than two minutes later, I heard a horse's footsteps getting louder and louder as they drew nearer. I grabbed my suitcase and ran toaards the dirt road. "Tya!"

"Sola!" I heard her yell my name from behind the trees, and then she appeared looking magical on her brown, black, and white horse. "Here's your horse."

She nodded her head towards a jet black stallion. "That's mine?" I said, not knowing what else to say. It was beautiful, and looked as though it had just gotten groomed, exactly the opposite of Magic. My eyes were wide, and Tya giggled at the sight.

"You must be Sola," said a voice from behind me. I turned around to face who I assumed was Tya's father.

"Yes, I am. Thank you so much for taking me to Ever."

"No problem." He smiled, in a way that reminded me of Dad. I returned a smile, and fastened my suitcase to my horse. Her Dad helped me a little, since I was too ecstatic to concentrate, and almost dropped my suitcase twice. Of course, there are no good first impressions for me. But this family seemed to kind to me, no matter what I did, which is a good thing.

"OK, we're ready. Let's go!" Her dad led the way, and Tya and I trailed behind. Our horses trotted right next to each other.

Most of the time, we talked about how much fun we will have  in Ever. We also talked about what type of dragon we wanted. There are four kinds of dragons: fire, water, earth, and air. Basically, they follow after each element. Tya wants earth. She doesn't have a solid reason why, she said, "I don't know. Just 'cause." Her dad then stopped her to ask a question, but I drifted off into thought. What type of dragon did I want? I really didn't have an idea. I'll just find out which one I'll get when we get there. The teachers give their students a certain type of dragon based on their skills. Based off of that notion, I still don't know what type I'll get.

The rest of the way seemed to go by so quickly, and we made it there earlier than expected. The sun was only beginning to disappear under the horizen.

We all stopped to stare at the castle. The only person that spoke was her dad. "We're here."

Her dad had to leave to take the horses home. They were weak from traveling so far on rough terrain, and were almost as tired as Tya and me. On the way here, I had found out that Tya was staying in the same room that I was, which made me very happy. So far, she is my only friend here in Ever. She is my only friend anywhere...

Despite our eyes almost closing on us, we found our room number nailed to a large door in a large hallway. Without saying another word, we put our suitcases next to one of the four beds. Then we went to sleep.

I had a dream last night, which was really weird. I haven't had a dream in years. Anyways, this one was difficult to remember. However, I do remember a bunch of faces I saw: Mine, then Tya's, and finally Dad's.

The strangest part was near the end of it. I was running towards two people, but I wasn't sure why I was running towards them, or even who they were. As I got closer, the faces came into focus. It was my brothers. Soa and Asku. I have never seen Soa before, since he was the oldest and left to take college for the Weather kind. As for Asku, I lived with him and Dad for five years before he left, too. The only way I recognized their faces was by photographs that Dad showed me. But after I had hugged them in my dream, they faded away, and left me alone in a completely white room, with no way out.

I woke up from the dream, and looked over at Tya. She was still sleeping. I couldn't find a clock to see what time it was, but it was still dark. So I laid down again, and closed my eyes. But my racing thoughts kept my eyes open until the sun woke up.
