6. Groceries

Nia Riley

"Are you excited?" I asked Chris as we drove to the airport to pick up his mom.

I knew he was excited, he'd been smiling all day and making sure the house was spotless.

"Hell yeah, I'm about to eat so good."

"So I can't cook good?" My eyebrows rose.

"You can baby." Chris laughed. "But you ain't from the south, you know?"

I laughed and nodded. I definitely wasn't from the south.

We pulled up the airport pick up area and Chris parked the Bentley.

I was excited too, Mama Joyce was gonna cook, and she was really nice to me and we got along, and of course she was gonna insist on cooking, and I didn't mind at all, I loved her cooking.

"Aight lemme call her and tell her we're here."

"Okay I'm gonna go in and get her."

"Bet."

I got out the car and walked into the cold air conditioned airport.

I looked around at first and didn't see Mama Joyce so I just sat down and waited for her to come to the pick up area.

I sat down in a chair and pulled out my phone to waste some time.

"Nia? Is that you?" A voice asked from behind me.

I whipped around and looked up at Mama Joyce, who looked like she'd just had a wonderful nap on the plane.

"Hey Mama Joyce!" I jumped up and hugged her, squeezing her kind of tight.

I really had missed her.

We hadn't seen her since we were in the hospital, but she'd still been a great support system for us, calling like two, three times a week, constantly checking in on Chris and things of that nature.

"Hey sweetie, how're you?"

"I'm great, I can't complain." I smiled. "Come on, Chris is waiting right out front."

I grabbed a bag from her and lead her out of the building and into the Bentley quickly as possible.

Chris pulled off and we headed back to the house in a hurry.

Mama Joyce had a 6 o'clock flight, so we had to wake up early as hell compared to our normal schedule and head to the airport to pick her up.

Now that she was with us, I was gonna get three more hours of sleep.

"Hey mama, I missed you." Chris told her.

"I missed you too Chris, you look really good baby."

I nodded in agreement with her. Chris was really healing so well since he'd been home from the hospital, even his physical therapist had said the same thing.

"Thanks mama, I feel good." He looked at her since I was sitting in the back sprawled out.

"I'm hungry Chris." I mumbled as we drove home.

"Whatchu want?"

"I'll cook when we get home." Mama Joyce said.

Chris and I started shaking our heads immediately.
