I sat at Dave's dining room table beside Kairi eating my fried dumpling with fried fish and okra, watching her feed herself. I told Dave I was in the mood for some good shit to eat, and he delivered.
"It's good Kairi?" Dave asked when he walked back into the room and noticed her tearing her plate up. She really had such a good appetite, I'd never seen her eat baby food, baby girl was always tearing up big girl plates, and then someone else's plate. She kept a bottle though.
"You good Nia?" He asked me with a smile as he pulled up a chair and sat down between Kairi and I.
"Yeah I'm great, thanks for asking. How are you?"
"I'm coolin', wanna go to the studio for a lil bit, but I'm straight."
I nodded. "I wanna get a new camera, I got a few shoots set up."
"Look atchu with your 'I can make money in any city' ass." Dave laughed. "I'll take you wherever you wanna go though."
"That's exactly what I wanted to hear."

Hours later, and after an event filled day full of running around in New York's traffic, getting a new camera, and two photoshoots, I walked into Sakura steakhouse with Dave.
His treat.
He'd went to the studio earlier, so he seemed to be in good spirits, and I wanted steak and lobster, so I hoped he kept that energy.
"Am I allowed to tell you you look amazing right now?" He asked after we were led to our table and given time to read the menu.
I laughed and nodded. "I'm allowed to receive compliments Dave, Nia runs Nia, no one else."
Dave put his hands up. "I ain't say that, or tryna say that, I was just asking. I know you still don't know what the fuck you gone do with that, well I don't know, but I didn't mean it like that."
I shook my head. "You're good Dave, I know. And you're right, I haven't been thinking about it, I've just been trying to get back to me, my health, my sanity. I'm gonna get real selfish soon."
"Anyways, what are you gonna get?" I opened my menu, automatically going to the wine page. I was in the mood for something light to start.
Dave started looking at his menu as well, and I looked down at my phone, at a notification from instagram telling me I had messages waiting for me.
