7. Mama

Nia Riley

Chris, his mother, and I all sat at the table, eating the homemade lasagna she'd made for lunch.

I feel like she put extra cheese in here today, cause it was definitely hitting.

I could feel Chris's eyes on me, Mama Joyce's eyes on Chris and me, and I was just looking down at my plate.

"Okay, what's going on? I feel like there's so much tension in this room right now."

Chris shook his head. "Nothing's wrong, this food's good mama."

"Thanks Chris. Nia are you okay?"

I nodded. "I'm great."

I heard Mama Joyce sigh. She wasn't gonna get shit outta me.

"So have you guys been planning the wedding at all?"

I fought the urge to laugh. If she only knew.

I wasn't even wearing my ring, I'd taken it off after I threw the perfume and I'd cut my finger.

When no one answered her, she started looking at both of us.

"Okay, spill it. Who cheated?"

I tried to hide my surprise that she was spotfuckingon.

Good for mama Joyce, she didn't let anything slip past her.

Chris laughed. "Why you always thinking negative mama?"

"It was you huh?" She pointed to him.

Chris shut up really quickly.

"Is that why you were crying Nia? Talk to me." Mama Joyce reached out to grab hold of my hand.

I looked at Chris. This was his time to speak up.

"Ask your son."

Her attention turned to Chris. "Chris, why isn't anyone talking to me? What's going on son?"

"Everything's fine ma, don't worry yourself."

"Stop telling me everything's fine, when nothing's fine Chris. You and Nia don't act like this towards, I asked if you cheated, you didn't say anything back to me, cause you knew if you lied to me I'd whoop your ass, so just talk to me, both of you."

Like I said, I wasn't going to say anything until Chris did.

"Chris." His mom repeated.

"Aight man!" He yelled. "I cheated on Nia like a year ago and now this girl's talking about a baby."

"I'm sorry, did you say a baby?"

He nodded. "Yeah, but I'on know if she's mine."

After that all you could hear was silence, well silence except for me cutting up pieces of lasagna and stuffing them into my mouth.

"Chris, I'm so disappointed in you." She shook her head.

"I know ma, I should've never done it."

"Should've used protection."

He nodded. "I know mama."

"And what if this baby is yours Chris? What're you gonna do?"

Chris shook his head. "That baby ain't mines."
