15. Daddy Daycare

Nia Riley

"Do you like this one?" I grabbed the multicolored, striped dress off of the rack and looked behind me at Chris.

He was on his phone, his attention deep in it. "Yeah it's cool."

"It'd be cool if you looked at it."

He locked his phone and looked up at me, and the dress finally. "Sorry babe."

He walked up to me and wrapped his arms around me. "I'm just so focused on this court date coming up soon, I need full custody of that little girl Nia, it's all I can think about."

I nodded into into his shoulder. "I understand."

I honestly did, he'd been stressing all damn week over this case, talking to his lawyer every day, I definitely saw his heart was in it.

I just wish it was in my gallery, like it had been.

But Ebony and I had it under control, so I wasn't worried about it.

"Yeah I like that dress, you gone try it on?" Chris's eyes finally landed on the dress I was speaking about.

I shook my head. "Nah, I'm gonna try something else."

He nodded and started scrolling through his phone again. "Aye Nia."

I looked back at him while I walked to another section of Sorela, Heather's boutique. She told me I could have something free from her store to wear to my gallery, so now I was looking at the options I had to work with.

"Hmm?"

He flipped his iPhone 6S around and showed me a pair of toddler BAPE sneakers he was browsing online. "You like these for Royalty?"

I fought the urge to roll my eyes and throw the phone across the store. We weren't shopping for Royalty right now, I needed his advice, not vice versa.

I didn't want to sound jealous of a harmless, innocent child, but I couldn't even help it anymore.

I never thought Chris's already wide spread attention span would be focused all on Royalty, but I guess that's what happened when a child came into your life.

But I just couldn't race and wrap my arms around Royalty like Chris had.

There was something in me that couldn't.

That wasn't my child. That was Nia and Chris's child, not mine.

And I knew I wasn't supposed to think like that, being an adult, I needed to be grown and not blame an innocent little girl for something she couldn't control, but I just couldn't. Not right now.

I don't know when I would be able to either, and until that point, I was forever going to feel a type of way.

Chris and I climbed back into my Jeep after I finally found my outfit for the showcase. It was a tight bodysuit type of ordeal, very cute though.

"What is she calling me for?" He sighed and looked down at his quivering phone sitting on his lap.

I looked down at the phone while I started the engine. "Who?"

"Fucking Nia." He paused. "Wassup?"

She started speaking to him about something, I tried to listen, but all I heard was mumbles.

"Right now? What job Nia? You don't work. You just leech off of my money." He sighed.

"So if I watch Royalty, you'll be able to go to work right now? Mhmm."

He looked over at me, and then back straight through the glass windshield. "Yeah I got you, I'll pull up."

Chris hung up the call and sighed. "I need to find a babysitter."

"She got a job?" I questioned, trying to get some type of information on what just happened.

"Yeah, she got work tonight and shit, didn't realize she needed someone to watch Royalty until just now."

"So you're about to go over there now?"

He nodded his head. "Wow, I'm about to spend time with her for the first time by myself." A wide smile spread across his face.

I was happy Chris was going to see Royalty and spend some quality time with her, Nia was finally coming to her damn senses.

He did tell me he was gonna spend today helping me and keeping me company also though, but I understood, Royalty came first.

She just wasn't my child, so she didn't come first to me.

Christopher Maurice Brown

"Alright Chris, I'll be back after this training, it's only four hours. I already fed her, but she has snacks. She's in her bed by nine o'clock or she's cranky, and please make sure she goes to bed with a dry diaper."

"I got this Nia." I brushed her off as Royalty pulled at my shirt, trying to get my attention.

"Okay, call me if you need me. Royalty come kiss momma."

She held her arms open waiting for Royalty to climb into her grasp, but she was attached to my chain.

"Yeah baby, those are real diamonds. Daddy don't do no fugazi. You see them shining?"

I looked down at Royalty staring down at the way my jewelry glistened, it had all attention, making me smile.

This was really my daughter, my blood, me, reincarnated. She had some of my features too, her momma's hair and skin color though.

"Alright, have fun guys. See you later. Thanks again Chris."

"It's nothing, you see we can get along and work together sometimes right?" My eyebrow raised.

She rolled her eyes but a small smile spread on her lips. "Yeah you're right. We'll talk. See you later."

She dipped out her crib, leaving me and my baby girl to get to know each other.

"Whatchu wanna do boo? Watch a movie? Sleep? Eat?"

Royalty held my chain and looked up at me with big eyes. "Momma."

"No dada, momma ain't shit."

I carried Royalty to the couch set up in the corner of the living room and grabbed the remote so I could find something for us to watch.

"Whatchu like baby? Barney? Cailou?"

She yawned and curled into my arm that was wrapped around her more than before.

"Aww you tired?"

I stared down at her as I watched her precious face scrunch up in another yawn.

This really was my baby girl, my little creation, me.

I would do anything to give her everything she wanted and desired, and needed, just so she wouldn't have to look for it from anyone other than her father, her provider.

I was gonna show her how she really needed to be treated, like a literal queen, like I tried to treat my baby Nia like.

But I wouldn't fail with Royalty, ever.

I couldn't.

I would never let her believe her daddy wasn't shit like everyone tried to make me out to seem, she'd always know the truth, despite what the media, her own damn momma said.
