Chapter 23

Emma POV

I continued trying to pull at my sleeve, but I was losing my strength, and not to mention, air! I was completely freaking out at this point.

I heard a splash underwater, but I didn't look away from my sleeve. I felt arms around me. Whoever it was, yanked super hard on my sleeve, pulling it free. They wrapped their arms under mine, and pulled me to the surface, and up on the side of the pool.

There were tears streaming down my face as I started coughing like crazy. I was too weak to stand, so I was laying on the ground, coughing and coughing and coughing! And it did not feel too good.

After I could breathe somewhat normally again, I realized how much water had gone up my nose. I stayed laying face down on the ground with my arms outstretched, resting from that incident.

I felt a hand on my back, and I got chills down my spine, wondering who it was. I turned, still on the ground, and looked up. I saw a pair of familiar hazel eyes. Riker.

"Are you ok?" Riker asked, almost whispering.

"Thanks to you..."

I turned around when I heard voices.

"Oh my god! What happened!?" Chase yelled, running over to me with Rydel.

I completely forgot. We had a date today.

Chase knelt down beside me, helping me sit up.

"What happened to my girl?" Chase asked.

"I'll um... I'll tell you later... Let me go change. And then we can leave," I said, standing up.

I immediately felt dizzy. Chase walked me upstairs, making sure I didn't fall. He even waited outside Rydel's door for me. It was so sweet.

Emma POV

"It was just so scary. I couldn't get out, and I couldn't breathe!" I said, almost shouting.

Chase and I were sitting at a picnic table in the park.

"Well how'd you get out!?"

"I don't really know exactly what happened, but Riker saved me."

"Who's Riker?"

"He's Rydel's brother. So I live with him too."

"Oh, ok."

"Yeah... He was able to pull me free, and out of the pool. And it was a good thing he pulled me out because I didn't have enough strength left in me."

"I can't believe my girlfriend almost died today! That would've been so awful!"

Chase took my hand in his and rubbed it slowly with his thumb.

"Promise me you'll be more careful."

"I will. No more walking around in the backyard with my phone!" I said, smiling.

Chase smiled back at me.

"Awesome."

Later...

Emma POV

When everyone else found out I almost died, I was attacked with hugs when I got home. Except Riker. He was nowhere to be seen.

Rydel pulled me up to her room while talking about how sad she would've been if something happened to me. I wasn't really paying attention. I was thinking about Riker. If he hated me enough to want nothing to do with me, then why'd he save me? He could've let me die, and then he'd never have to see or deal with me again! I'm pretty sure bad boy Riker wouldn't care!

I went to the bathroom to change into my pajamas. I passed Riker in the hall. Our eyes connected for a few seconds, but neither one of us said anything.

I sat next to Rydel in bed. I was exhausted from today. Not just because I almost died, but because Chase asked me a million questions. They were all random questions though. It was like he was trying to get to know me better or something. I didn't really know what to make of it. But he made me feel important. And I loved it.

"Rydel?"

"Yeah?"

"Can you tell me what happened after Chase and I left today?"

"Yeah. Any reason why?"

"Just wondering..."

"Do you want a summary of the day, or are you just wondering about Riker?" Rydel said, smiling.

"I'm wondering about Riker, but I don't mean it like that."

"Whatever... Riker went upstairs to change because he was all wet and stuff. He basically stayed in his room for the rest of the day. He didn't even come down for meals and stuff."

I sighed and looked at the blanket on top of me. It was blue... Riker's favorite color...

I groaned and laid down on my pillow.

"What? Are you ok?"

"My mind wants to think about Riker all the time, but I don't want it to! I'm done with him! My mind is being like a psychotic fan girl who ships two people, and won't stop freaking out! I've had it! I just want to go to sleep!"

I felt Rydel get out of bed, and I saw the lights go off. The bed dipped down again, and I heard Rydel adjust the blankets.

"Rydel, I'm sorry."

"No, I totally understand. It's fine. If you feel better in the morning, we can talk if you want."

"Thanks, Rydel. Goodnight."

"Goodnight."
