Chapter 13

Riker POV

I swear I saw something move in the hallway. My eyes tried to focus, but it was just so dark! I held onto Emma a little tighter. I tried to focus on the movie again and tell myself I was crazy. But I felt like I heard footsteps.

"BOO!"

Emma screamed so loud, my ears were ringing. She dropped my hand, and wrapped her arm across my stomach, almost squishing me too tight. I'll admit, I screamed too, and held Emma closer.

When I looked up, I saw Ross standing behind the couch, laughing hysterically. I practically threw Emma off of me, and jumped over the back of the couch, staring down my little brother.

"Not cool, bro!" I said, angrily.

"I thought it was pretty funny!"

"Well we didn't!"

I put my hands on Ross's shoulders and pushed him backwards a little. I walked back to my spot on the couch. Emma lifted the blanket so I could sit down again. She snuggled down next to me under the blanket. I loved every second of it.

I unpaused the movie. I felt a little better about the whole feeling someone watching us thing. But I still had that feeling. And I swear I could hear footsteps and weird noises coming from behind us in the kitchen.

"Riker?" Emma whispered.

"What?" I whispered back.

"Did you hear that?"

"Yeah..."

I paused the movie and turned around on the couch so I was facing the dark kitchen.

"We know it's you Ross!" I called.

"What?" Ross called, clearly from upstairs.

My eyes widened. I only just realized how tight Emma was holding my hand. I got up slowly, still facing the kitchen. Emma got up too. I kind of held her behind me. She was holding both of my hands so tight!

"Riker. What do we do?" Emma whispered so softly I could barely hear her.

"Um... Stay here. I'll go see what's going on in there."

"No! I'm coming with you."

"Emma-"

"What if I get killed while you're in there!?"

"Ok, fine."

I grabbed the fire poker before I started walking slowly against the wall with Emma close behind. We held hands as we walked. As we got closer to the kitchen, I raised the fire poker over my head.

I flicked the kitchen light on and quickly looked around.

Nothing.

I breathed a sigh of relief, and lowered the fire poker. I heard someone coming down the stairs, so I stood in front of Emma, just in case it was a murderer or something.

"Riker!? What on earth are you doing!?" My mom asked, walking into the kitchen.

"Um... We were watching a movie. And we heard something."

My mom rolled her eyes.

"You guys are ridiculous! Were you watching a scary movie?"

I looked down at my feet.

"Maybe..." I mumbled.

"Riker! Why don't you say goodnight to Emma, and you guys can go to sleep."
