A week came and went pretty fast, and I couldn't get my mind off of what we were doing. In my head I knew it was best for the clan but there was a nagging feeling in my subconscious that told me what we were doing was wrong.
About an hour before we were supposed to leave for the 'expadition' as they called it, I was pacing through the halls, soldiers were talking about how it would be, who would guard Eren and other stuff. I didn't know why the teen needed gaurding, maybe he was a criminal. I didn't care.
I passed the dwarfs office and heard Faes voice from inside, "And they're planning on leaving with the supplies in the chaos today." She reports. That little snitch!
"Are you sure?" The dwarf asks, sounding somewhat surprised. "And you agreed?" There was silence and I could sense Faes unease. I cracked open the door a little to peak inside, I saw the dwarf leaning on his desk and fae standing in front of him.
Neither seemed to see me, and I couldn't see Faes face but I saw his. "Don't worry, we won't hurt them. Thank you for telling me." He says somewhat calmly. He didn't seem as harsh as before and I almost feel bad about imagining his death. Almost.
I blink twice at what I see next, he smiles, places a hand on her cheek, and kisses her. My eyes widen. She was kissing back! How long had this been going on? Why hadn't I smelled him on her, or sensed her passion when we were near him. One thing was for sure, this wasn't their first kiss. This was a kiss of passion and lust. A kiss of lovers.
She wraps her arms around his neck and he pulls her closer, setting her on the desk. I close the door, not wanting to watch the rest. By the noise from behind it I could tell that the kiss and moved on to something else.
I ran to find Foal. He'd know what to do! I stopped dead in my tracks when I heard hanjis voice behind me. "Another sassy ginger I should have known!" She says, I turn to see her looking through the now open door. Fae had betrayed us, but she was still part of our clan. She had saved both Foal and I from titans in the past, now I had to help her. I couldn't just leave her there.
I walk up beside Hanji and pier into the room, the dwarf and Fae both only half dressed and blushing. "Fae!" I say, trying to sound shocked and offended. It aparantly worked.
"River! It's not what it looks like!" She insists.
"You were fucking the wall dweller!" I scold. I sign 'it's ok, play along. I'm not mad.' With my eyes and she signs back 'ok'.
"Well...I just...um..." she struggles to come up with a response.
"In our culture she is to be dealt with by the group as a whole, I have to take her back to Foal and the others." I say, that was a lie. A completely bullshited lie. But it worked.
Fae got up and put her shirt and pants back on, before walking towards me.
"Wait." Commands the dwarf, his face back to the evil glare I knew as normal. "She's not going with you. I've seen what you do to people who don't follow your rules, I don't want her getting hurt." He says.
"Aw Levi you have feelings!" Hanji beams. But I think she was more into his abs then his feelings.
"We will deal with her how we see fit." I say.
He looks from me to Fae then to Hanji. "Grab them, they are planning on stealing the supplies, Fae told me." He says. I feel my arm is gripped from behind, she moved before I could tell she had heard him! He grabbed Fae and hugged her close. "It's ok." He assures her.
'Help me!' I sign. 'Who are you loyal to?! Him or your clan?' Try to look as serious as I can, as serious as Foal. She looks from me to him, looking in his eyes. He doesn't understand that we can sign to each other so there's no one but her alone to make the decesion, no one to help her.
'Fae please.' I sign. She hesitates before pushing him away and grabbing my wrist, pulling me from Hanjis grasp and down the hall. I didn't say anything, not even thank you, because I knew right now she was holding back tears. He would hate her now.
We ran to Foal and Night, they were already suited up in 3dmg, as was I.
"We have to go. The wall dwellers know about our plans." I say.
"What?! How?!" Foal asks, angry.
"No time." I respond before running off, now with all three of them tagging behind me. I sniff the air, the dwarf and Hanji are following us. No one else. We make our way to the crowd of people on horses, hiding between them, we are still chased. Thank god they didn't call out to the other soldiers or we'd be done for.
We get strange looks but make our way to the front before they finally do call out. "Stop them!" But it's to late, the gate opens and we rush out, not looking back. Never looking back. I fear that everyone is thinking the same thing as me, the thing nobody wants to admit. No matter what, we can never return to the walls.
It's about 20 minutes before we are deep enough in a forest to catch our breath, having outrun the soldiers already. I look around at the three fimilar faces in front of me. Fae, seems sadded but tries to stay strong, her brother knows somethings up and has a hint of worry bleeding through his calm face.
Then I see Foal, shooting me a glance of hatred. He opens his mouth to speak and I know what he'll say. 'How did they know?' And then I'll have to turn Fae in and be scolded by the leader of the clan. 'You are not capable to lead a hunting group! You blew our chances! You didn't sense that a traitor was among you!' But that's not what he said. What he said was much worse. Something I had completely forgotten. Something that sent at chill up my spine.
"Where's Stream?"
Stream was still in the walls.
