Chapter 13

A/N: What? Another update?! Yeab, I figured I owed it to you guys because of the awful chapter I posted earlier. :p

I watch River peacefully sleep and smile. She was so cute asleep. She was unaware that I had returned from seeing Foal. I figure I'd wait here for her when she wakes up.

She begins to toss and turn in her sleep, dispite her bad back. I'm worried that she's not having a good dream so I atempt to wake her, she jerks away at my touch.

"River?" I ask. For a moment I think she hears me because she responds with my name.

"Stream..." she mumbles.

"I'm here."

No response. Then she mumbles my name again, "Stream..."

"River I'm here."

"Stream..."

I sigh. She's probably just dreaming about me. It did seem like a bad dream though with all the thrashing around she was doing...unless it was...no...River's not like that.

"Dwarf..." she mumbles.

The dwarf? Levi? Why was she thinking of him? Her face filled with fear and she froze, going silent. Gradually her face melted back into a calm sleep state and her breaths slowed more than normal.

For the next few months she didn't speak or move. A coma they said. Foal must have beat her up to badly.

I would visit her, the rest of the clan would too. Even the dwarf would. He had broken up with Fae the day he and River kissed, she was devistated but Fae being Fae she pretended to be strong and unbothered by it. I could tell she was however. Everytime she would visit she would look at River with jealousy and envy.

Foal would speak to her, apalogizing. He felt it was his fault. And it was. But I didn't antagonize him. He was doing it for me.

"River," I heard him say one day. "River I'm sorry." He took her hand. "I'm so sorry." He began to cry. "I'm love you little sister, and when you wake up things are gonna change between us. I promise." He kissed her hand and left.

Nights visits were different. He saw her as not only a leader but a friend. One night I overheard him speaking from her room.

"I'll make him pay for doing this to you." He says. "I'll make sure no one allows Foal to be leader. You're out leader. I love you River." Those words made me almost drop what I was holding until he added, "like a sister." I sighed in relief.

The door swung open. "What were you doing out here Stream?" He asks.

"N-Nothing!" I respond quickly before surrying down the hall, dodging any other questions he could possibly ask me. Yes I was with Foal but I still liked River. And she liked that stupid wall dweller. Stupid dwarf.

Time dragged on and on and everyone's visits continued, one time I heard Foal softly singing her a lullaby their mother had signed every night to them. He didn't know the tune, none of us did, singing was to risky, so he made it up as he went along.

Small one,

He sees you in the dark,

He'll let you see,

He's watching.
And saving.
You.

I stopped outside the door and listened to his calm deep voice, it was beautiful. I hadn't heard a song in forever. It seemed almost out of place in the cruelty of this world to be singing such a soft and peaceful tune. He continued with the next verse.
