Author's Note: On the Subject of Art

This collection of poetry will be added to all throughout highschool. The mood of the poems range of joviality to melancholia, and the topics range from lust to heartbreak. Since I'm only human like everyone else, I hope that some out there who read my poems may at least be able to take solace in the fact that they are not alone. The collection starts in Sophomore year. Most of the poems in the beginning are about a single person, a boy, but as the collection progresses that is subject to change. Not only does this collection showcase my poetic skills, but it also serves as a time line for my emotions and progession towards happiness. I truly believe that happiness is a lifestyle, and one cannot truly achieve happiness without fully commiting themselves to it. Poetry is not dead, it is as alive and as vibrant as the life that inhabits this Earth. Poetry should be able to convey intense emotions, and should serve as a means to communicate the words that are too difficult to say in plain English. Poetry is art, and art is an expression of human emotion. Art is not a commodity, nor is it simply a one dimensional piece of work like a block of code, whose only function is to carry out a distinctive, specifically defined role. Art is subjective, and when one views art, one should keep in mind that behind the piece of art lies a world of emotion, a story, a moment in time. What goes into art should be emotion, time, dedication, and a strong desire to express yourself to the world. Nothing less is acceptable. Art is not objective, it is subjective, and that is what makes it beautiful. A true testiment to the myriad of emotions people feel when creating art is the fact that each person who views the art may take away a different meaning or feeling from that piece. When reading my poetry, try as best you can to visualize the emotion behind the piece. Not only will the poetry sound and feel better, but if you open yourself up to the emotion, you may discover parts of your being that you never knew you had before.
