                                                                         -Astrid's POV-

I ran as fast as I could- I'm sure my body would be shaking if I wasn't so busy running. The only things that I could hear was my heavy breathing and the pounding of my bare feet hitting the pavement. I couldn't stop- I wouldn't. I shoved a few strands of dirty-waves out of my face.

My dark blue eyes darted around, until they finally landed on a dirt path leading into the woods. Well, I thought. It may be scary, but it's not as scary as the monster chasing me.

"Astrid!!!" He shouted, "Astrid!!! Get your dirty ass back here!!" He growled. But I didn't want to go back. He'd only hurt me again. So I couldn't go back, I was never going back. I bolted towards the dirt path, and I knew he was losing sight of me. I was going too fast.

I have to admit- it hurt. A lot. The sharp rocks dug into my bare feet, but again. I didn't stop. I felt the tears sting my eyes, but it wasn't because of the cuts on my feet. I was scared. Petrefied. I bit my lip, and continued running.

After about another hour, it was pretty dark, and I was hopelessly lost in the forest. I couldn't hear his footsteps anymore, nor could I hear his continuous shouting. I finally stopped, trying to catch my breath. I beant over, placing my hands on wobbly knees. Even though it was still dark, I could still make out the dark purple and blue bruises littered across my pale skin. I felt the hot tears prick my eyes, and I couldn't help it anymore. I collapsed to the forest floor, and I cried.

Sobbed, even.

A ragged sob made it's way out of my mouth, and I cried harder. My body trembled and shook, and I couldn't control any of it. It's not like Matt had starved me- Oh, no. He had done much worse. He beat me. Matt was my adopted father, and I hated him with every ounce of my being. I had still gone to school, but I never had any friends. He wouldn't let me. My parents had died when I was 12, and since I had no family, I was adopted.

Matt wasn't home too too often, but when he was, he was either drunk or high. He'd get angry at me- Furious. He would beat my physically, and verbally.

So I finally ran away from him.

My battered body trembled, and I started to see black dots cover my vision, but before I blacked out, I heard a fierce growl somewhere near me.

                                                                      -Asher's POV-

I padded around the woods, my black and large paws hitting the ground with every step. My eyes darted around the trees, and I heard crying. I sniffed around, trying to find a scent.

Yes, if you're wondering, I am a wolf. Alpha, to be precise. I frowned, the girl's cries becoming more desperate. I growled, looking around until I found her scent, and it was heavenly. I followed it through the woods, until I found a small clearing. My dark green eyes found a small body, curled up in the middle of the clearing. I could smell her blood, and my frown instantly deepened. Even though I have never seen or met this girl before, I didn't want her to be hurt. Ever.

I padded over to her, and she was beautiful. Long, dirty-blond waves scattered around the ground from her head, and she had full pink lips. She wore only a tee-shirt, and a pair of shorts. My eyes made their way to her legs, and a low growl bubbled from my lips as I regarded her legs. They were amazing, don't get me wrong, but there were dark purple bruises across her fair skin.

Her breathing was even, and I could still see the tear stains on her rosy cheeks. I didn't know why, but I wanted to protect her. Her smell was intoxicating- Lavender and strawberries. I nudged her side, hoping to wake her. She stirred, but didn't wake.

It was that moment that my wolf howled, roared even. He was chanting one thing- mate. Mate. Mate. He was raging at the fact that his little mate looked so hurt and broken.

I tried again, and licked the side of her face. A small whimper left her mouth, and it broke my heart. I wanted to shift, but my home was too far away, so I'd have to do it this way. I hooked my sharp canines carefully around her belt loops, and because of how large I was as a wolf, when I raised my head, and when her arms dangled, they didn't even touch the ground.

I started running towards my house, carrying her along with me, being careful not to hurt her. As soon as I was on my porch, I gently laid her down on the cold wood panels. I stepped back, my body trembling as I shifted.

Scooping her small body into my now human arms, I opened the front door and carried her inside and up the stairs. When I was met with the large white door to my bedroom, I kicked it open, walking over and placing her on the large four-post bed, pulling the covers over her trembling body. Climbing in next to her, I wrapped my strong arms around her tiny waist, pulling her close. I closed my eyes and let myself drift into sleep.
