Adam is outside the hotel the next morning at 9:30, as promised.

I grin as I run up to meet him and give him a kiss.

"Hey Adam! What are we doing today?"

He smiles.

"Well, I don't know what you want to do, but Mum's home today and I thought maybe you could come over and meet her."

"Um... Yeah, ok."

"We don't have to if you don't want to," he says hurriedly, looking at me.

"No, no it's fine, don't worry. I'd love to meet your parents!"

He frowns slightly but then quickly smiles again.

"What's wrong?" I ask.

"What? Oh nothing... Nothing. Yeah I'm fine. C'mon, let's go."

I feel worried about Adam but I don't push it. He takes my hand in his and starts swinging it as we walk.

"Do you have any siblings?" I ask.

"Yeah, I have an older brother and an older sister but they have their own lives and they don't come home very often." He looks a little sad as he says this.

"Aww, Adam, it's ok, at least you see them sometimes. And I guess it makes it all the more special when you do see them right?"

He glances at me and smiles.

"Right."

We carry on in a comfortable silence and soon we make it to Adam's street. He points out his house to me and it's HUGE. There's 3 storeys and a basement, according to Adam.

"Why do you have such a big house if there's just 3 of you that live there?" I ask, confused.

He hesitates before saying "You know how I told you that I only had two siblings?"

"Yeah..."

"Yeah, well, I actually have quite a lot more. They're not my full siblings though, just half."

"Half? As in..."

"Yeah. I have a step-dad."

"Where does your real dad live?"

He stops suddenly.

"He died when I was 3," he whispers.

I stare at him in shock.

"Oh my god, Adam, I-I'm so sorry, I..."

"No, no, it's ok, it wasn't your fault. Anyway, I didn't really know him, I can't miss him properly can I?" He tries to smile but I can see the tears brimming at his eyes. "Martin came when I was 5 and he's been great so..."

I have no idea what to say. This is horrible news!

"Oh... Um..."

He wipes his face and smiles.

"Anyway, don't worry about me. Time for you to come meet my family. I hope you like big families..."

When he said that I was expecting 3, maybe 4 kids, his Mum and his Step-Dad. What I see instead is about 10 kids running around- so many I can't actually count, 3 women, two men, and an older couple.

"Wow..."

Adam laughs.

"Yeah, there's quite a lot of us... But I like it this way. It means we never get bored."

He points everyone out to me. "So there's Gramps, and Grandma, and Mum, and Martin and Aunt Eliza and Uncle Gerrard. And that women talking to Mum is our neighbour, Jane, -she comes over a lot. And the kids... Well, you can't really tell them apart when they're all running around but there's Jackie, Melissa and Rueben- those are my cousins- and then there's Sasha, Lucy, Ricky, Ivory, Becky and Matthew. Becky and Ivory are twins and they're the oldest, but they're still 7 years younger than me." He sighs.
