Emily's POV

This was gonna be my first birthday where I spend it without Marshall. I can't remember a year where he wasn't present as my best friend or my boyfriend. It dampened my day. My whole week knowing he wasn't going to wish me a happy birthday, throw me in the air and laugh when I would scream. He wasn't going to hold my hand throughout dinner with the family. He wasn't going to kiss me and make me feel like I was the most special girl in the world. He wasn't going to surprise me with my gifts or whisper birthday sex in my ear all day.

"Happy Birthday Emily!" Vanessa says walking into my room on the saturday morning of my birthday. I sit up and chuckle looking at the cupcake with the candle sticking out. "Make a wish." She says as I blow the candle. "You wished for world peace didn't you?" I nod and she laughs hugging me.

"21! Turn up!" She screams. "You got so much stuff delivered. Come see." She says. I get out of bed and walk to the kitchen in my pyjamas, with my cupcake in my hand.

"Wow." I say looking at the different flowers that covered my kitchen table. There were balloons and a cake. I look at every bunch of flowers individually to find the card before I call them. My grandparents send me a hell of a lot of flowers.

"Hey gramz, thanks for the beautiful flowers!" I say once my grandmother picks up.

"Happy birthday sweety! You're so welcome. I'm so sorry I can't come see you on your 21st birthday but I love you so much!" My dads mother says. I chuckle and sit down.

"Its okay. I love you too!"

"Have a great day okay? Make sure you come visit me in New York soon!" She says and I chuckle.

"Okay, bye." I say before calling my grandpa's and other grandma, Dylans mother. My moms mother didn't like us really or my mom for that matter. She left her when she was a baby.

"Happy birthday baby." My dad says walking into the apartment.

"Thanks dad." I say hugging him back. "Wow, see I knew this would happen and my happy birthday message would be lost within the rest." He says and I chuckle admitting I didn't even get to that one yet. The big bundle of flowers from him and my mom and chocolates.

"Guess what I brought." He chuckles. Every birthday, my dad and I had a tradition of eating cake for breakfast. He'd give me my first gift and we wouldn't tell anyone. Especially when I was little hed get cake to my bed to eat and my mom would find it so unhealthy.

"I'm gonna take off before your mom knows what I'm up to. But heres your first gift." He says handing me a black box. I open it quickly to reveal a diamond necklace.

"Oh my God. Dad, this is like $12 million dollars."

"Just for you." He says kissing my cheek. "Happy birthday babygirl. I can't believe you're 21 today. It feels like yesterday your mom and I were struggling with your nappies. I'm so proud of who you have become. I love you loads." He says making ne tear up.

"You're making me cry!" I chuckle.

"Okay, okay. I'm leaving now." He saya hugging me. "See you tonight at dinner." He says as I walk him out. "How are you doing Vanessa?" My dad asks seeing Vanessa come out the room.

"Hey Sir, I'm feeling the festives!" She chuckles. My dad chuckles and leaves soon after.

"I almost fainted. Your dad is so incredibly hot."

"Ew." I say going back to open my other messages. "Noah and Freya send me ten balloons each." I say counting them. They had my name on them and a big 21.

"Oh yeah, Emily Rose Miller." She reads off the balloon. "Your family is so cute." There is a knock on the door and I get up to go see who it is. "Breakfast delivery." The guy says as I open the door. "Where shall I put these for you?" He asks and I point him to the kitchen. Who was this from? I look at the little card he gives me as he is about to leave.
