"Xandra, sweetie, stay awake we're almost home." She said, glancing at me through the review mirror. "We'll be home in a couple minutes."
"But, mommy I'm so sleepy." I coughed, playing with my freckled brunette doll.
"Alexandra. You know we have to run straight into the house so stay awake."
"But mommy, the sun hasn't set yet." I said, looking out the window golden light filtering through the trees that were whizzing by.
"I know, but I can't take any chances. I know it's been a long day, but you can wait just a bit longer. I'll even give you...chips?"
"Ice cream!?"
"No, you're sick. Maybe Friday?"
"Can it be cookies and cream?" I coughed.
"Yep, your favorite."
"And Astria?" I asked.
"Astria, can have some too."
"Good. Can I have chips too though?"
"Yes, only if you stay awake."
"Okay, can you at least turn on the radio?"
"Um, yes, it has to be low though." She said, putting up the radio just as the song ends.
I sighed, starting to cough. "Mommy?"
"Yes?"
"The kids at school say vampires don't exist."
Mommy was silent for a bit.
"Mommy, they say we're crazy." I whispered. "But I told them what us tell me! They just don't believe. I don't know what to do. They can get hurt."
"Just ignore them, okay? Keep to yourself and don't tell them about the vampires."
"But I don't get it. They all go out at night with their parents, and they're okay."
"Yes, honey but we're special, we're-"
Suddenly the car stopped, and my body was thrust forward, lashing back against my seat.
"Ow." I groan. "Mommy."
"Xandra, are you okay?"
"My chest hurts, but I'm okay."
"I'm sorry, somethings wrong with the car and-" Mommy stopped, looking outside.
The sun was below the horizon, colors swirling in the sky.
"Oh, no." She whispered, grabbing her bag and getting out of the car to my door.
"Xandra." She said, unbuckling my seat belt and lifting me into her arms. "I should've been faster damn it."
"Mommy? You're making me scared." I said, wrapping my arms on her shoulders.
"Shh, it's okay. Stay quiet. We're close to the house; just ten minutes, at most."
She started jogging, on the lonely road, dead leaves crunching under her feet. The sun setting casting dark shadows on the road.
"Mommy, I can run by myself."
"Shh, sweetie." She whispered.
So I stayed quiet, my stomach knotting in fear. Something just wasn't right.
"You know better then to be up past your bed time, Reagan." said a boy's voice. "You know he has been waiting for you to come out of your home for quite a while."
"Drew." Mommy whispered backing away. "Please, don't. Just leave."
"Why would you even take this chance? You don't even have a weapon do you?" He said, walking slowly forward, a chill flowing through the air.
I look behind me from my mom's shoulder; the boy towering over us, not really a boy at all, with skinny arms holding a cigarette. His red eyes glowing.
"A mom has to do what a mom has to do." She said, rubbing my back.
I cough, not able to hold it in.
"Does she have a cold? That can be easily fixed. You'd still have one daughter left." The fear heightened my heart pounding against my chest.
"Please stop." My mom whispered.
"It's it the prettiest Princess in the world?" He said, coming closer touching my cheek with the hand without the cigarette.
I cringe back into my mother.
"Drew, please don't."
"Don't what kill you?"
"Don't tell-" Then, my mom kick up hitting him as hard as she could dropping me at the same time.
"Run!" She said.
I remember what she had said before, that if anything happened to call the police because they would save us.
So, I ran up the road as fast as I could. I was the fastest runner in class I knew I could do it. My chest hurt, though, especially with the cold hitting my cheeks. I could do it, with the fear turning into adrenaline home felt so close.
Then, there was a sharp scream and all of a sudden it was quiet no sound at all.
My heart stopped in my chest, looking back and my mommy was lying down in the dead red leaves.
"Mommy?" I whispered, tears automatically clouding my eyes. Over flowing out down my cheeks. "Mama!" I squeaked.
"Mommy's dead, Princess." said Drew, in front of me. Picking me up squeezing my arms hard. "Aren't you a doll?"
I kick him as hard as I could in the stomach, in anger making him let me go. He slaps my face hard, and I scream. I remember a move from karate, as his arm goes around I step to the side forward, spin and kick his knee making him fall and I kick him as hard as I could to the head of my foot. With out looking, I run as fast as I can. I know if I make it into my home I'll be safe. My lungs are aching, my legs heavy, but I try to go even faster. He grabs the back of my shirt, his nails cutting my back and I fall forward, the back of my shirt ripping apart.
The vampire screams, an invisible wall holding him back. I sit up, tears seeping from my eyes. I feel like I can't feel my body at all, but I somehow get up, turn and I'm home.
"Wait princess, just wait."
I gasped. I opened my eyes and see the fairy lights hanging around my window. I'm awake, sweat and hair clinging in my forehead. "Damn it."
It's been eleven years, I've gotten stronger, older, and my heart still feels like it going to fall out of my chest.
