I wasn't ready. This couldn't possibly be happening, this had to be a test, but then why was there a fire?
I ran to the exit. Before I could get out the door, the vampire grabbed my arm and pulled me back. I went with the momentum and hit him with my elbow.
He swung me away, making me land in my stance.
The vampire laughed. "What do you think you can do to me little girl?"
"Nothing. I can't do anything to you, but I can try."
"Oh, a fighter?"
I gulped. "No."
"You know even if you did beat me, you can't beat all of us. In a couple minutes this whole campus will be burning."
I gave him a slow smile. "Why would you do that? When that's the best thing that can kill you? You're stupid."
The vampire's face turned angry back handing me, I caught his arm and using his momentum I dragged him down fast. He turned, grabbing my leg and dragging me down. I fell back, getting whiplash, but I kick him, getting out of his grasp. I stand up, kicking him in the face as he tried to get back up. I kick him again, right in the neck. If I can break his neck he'll be out for twenty-five seconds, maybe enough time for me to get to the door and pull the fire alarm, that would be the best way to warn everyone. I swept my foot back, to kick his neck one more time, but he knew what I was going to do, he rolled out of the way. He grabbed my leg, his red eyes glowing, and bit me. I screamed, with my other leg I kicked his head, making him let go and giving me room to kick in his neck. I stepped on it afterward, my leg was burning. "No, no, no, you shit-head. No." I screamed, kicking him over and over.
I took in a deep breath. The fire had spread close to us, and I grabbed him by the arm, dragging him close to the fire. I shook, getting him as close as possible. I kicked his head one more time, seeing him heal already. I ran out the door. I could see the glow of eyes in the trees, running toward to campus.
How did the protection runes fail? Where were the guards?
I ran to the Main Campus building.
Headmistress Luis was talking to teacher.
"What are you doing up, young lady?" Asked male Warrior, his hair was black and he was massive.
"I was just attacked. The vampires they're coming." I cried. "The gym it's on fire, and there are more coming. Just look outside."
They all seemed shocked, but Ms. Luis walked past me looking out the window. "It's on fire." She whispered.
"What happened to the guards?" Asked the Warrior.
"There's no time to wonder what's happening. Reyes call the rest of the guards get the weapons and see if you can hold them off. Protect all the dorms." said Ms. Luis, she took out her walky-talky. "Smith, evacuate the k-eight dorms. I repeat evacuate, right now. Merck, lock down the teens dorm. They'll be there any second, you have to place a lock down."
"Should you really do that?" I asked. "They want to burn down the campus, that's what the vampire said."
I could see Luis's mind swarming; I could see the conflict in her eyes.
"Then, we won't let them cause anymore fires. Tell me what happened."
I looked around at the teachers, and Warriors. "I went to the gym to find my phone. I went into the girl's locker room but I couldn't find it. I heard someone in the gym, I thought it was a janitor, but it wasn't. I fought him, but didn't have any weapons so I had to leave him close to the fire."
Ms. Luis nodded. "So he's dead?"
"I don't know; I did the best I could. He didn't fight hard; I don't understand why."
"Did you get hurt?"
I hesitated. We can turn into vampires completely, but it took seventy-two hours, that or your body rejects the transformation. I needed to figure it out, I had to process this on my own. "No."
"We'll talk about this later, but I want a full report. Harold, take her to the office. Lock her down."
"What? Why? I want to go to the dorms, I need to be with my sister? Plus, I didn't do anything wrong. If I didn't come, we would be completely unprepared."
"Yes, but even so you're just a student under our protection. Your sister will be okay. Go now."
Harold, another teacher of mine, nodded, and took me down the halls. "Don't worry, we'll take care of this. Vampires aren't people who get along together. I'm sure it's no more than a dozen."
"What do you think happened to the Guards though? Or the runes?"
"It must have been someone on the inside."
"Why would anyone work with them?"
He looked back at me. "For eternal life?"
"Oh, but at the cost of killing people?"
"Some people don't care."
I frowned. "Do you care?"
"Of course."
Then, my phone rang.
I stopped in the middle of the hallway.
Could he be the second pair of foot steps I heard in the gym? Why would he do that?
"So there's a traitor, huh?" I asked.
Harold smiled, and turned to me. "Maybe more than one."
Then, I punched him in the face.
