Nothing.
They found nothing.
Ann had been born, gotten married, and buried her husband. That was all they found in the papers at the local library.
Parris held Cass's hand as she drove him home. "Jake lost his dad when he was just a little kid."
"We talked about it a lot. With my mom leaving it was like I could relate. We would try to figure out who had it worst, we could never decide. At least his dad didn't choose to leave, my mom chose."
"Both are too tough, no one should have to go through what you did." He squeezed her hand.
"Can't argue with you."
She pulled into his driveway. "Thanks for today. I really like your company."
He leaned towards her. "I like yours too." He ran his thumb along her jaw and kissed her gently.
Cass drove home in a stunned happy daze. Parris kissed me! Her mind replayed the kiss over and over. Her heart still hurt from Jake's rejection and knowing that Ann would die. She was grateful for the distraction that Parris offered.
Thinking about the kiss, she didn't notice the sleek black car on the street in front of her house.
She went in the side door. The TV was on but it sounded strange.
There were two conversations going on.
Her father was in the living room talking to a woman.
The woman said, "It's too late. She's already met the boy. You know that any new guy could have been the one."
Her dad responded, "He was just so normal. He told me Cass didn't want to go and she was a great sport. I really liked him."
The woman said some more and there was some shuffling.
Her dad peaked around out the living room. "Hey hon, come on in and have a seat." His voice was calm.
As she stepped around the corner she saw a tall blonde with her hair pulled into a tight bun with jeweled pens stuck into it.
Her pantsuit was expensive. It was tailored perfectly to fit her mom.
Cass looked at the woman who had left her 8 years ago. She should feel something, but Cass was on emotional overload and felt nothing.
