Chapter 11
The following Friday had a weird feel to it. For some reason that I couldn’t understand Mr. Carlton was smiling. In fact that was all he did for the entire hour; smile. He didn’t take his eyes off me for more than a few seconds and when he did he was smirking at Demetrius. I felt my skin crawl every time he looked at me. It was almost as if he was undressing me in his mind and truthfully I believed that he was.
At the end of the day Sarah’s mom picked her up and her new time leaving me with Cassidy and Demetrius.
Since the day had begun I had noticed that he was avoided my gaze and I would have confronted him about it but every time I tried he would make up some excuse as to why he had to go somewhere else. I was beginning to worry. He was hiding something and I didn’t have nearly enough faith in him to just let him be. He was a liar which didn’t leave much room for trust in the first place.
“Uh Jamie . . . I can’t accompany you to Mr. Carlton’s house tonight. . .” he said with a wary stare.
“What?! But why?! You need to follow me, who knows what will happen it I’m alone!” I protested. Was he feeling alright? He knew what that man was capable and I was sure that he knew that man’s intentions because they were quite plain and yet he was going to make me go alone.
“I know but I’m on duty tonight at the Guard House—“
“No you’re not, it’s Scarlet’s turn.” Cassidy interrupted him saying. Oh so now he was lying to me again.
“I switched with her!” He shouted. He sounded . . . tense . . . “Anyways Cass will be following you tonight.” He said dismissively.
“But what if he attacks her again.” Was he listening to himself?
“Yeah!” Cassidy said in protest.
He stared at us but didn’t answer. Exactly he had no answer so I didn’t see why he would just decide to switch duties with his sister on a night that he knew I needed him. He turned and began walking away. “I probably won’t see you until tomorrow so . . .have a good night.” That last part sounded strained. Almost as if he had a hard time accepting that I would have a ‘good night’ as he called it.
“He’s hiding something . . .” Cassidy said contemplatively staring at him as he walked away, “but unfortunately I don’t know what.” She sighed and walked after him. “I’ll see you tonight.” She called over her shoulder.
“Yeah . . .” I was already having my doubts about what later held. Without Demetrius a million things could go wrong. He knew that too so why was he doing this . . . ?
That night mom dropped me and Cassidy at Mr. Carlton’s on her way to a local function that her company was putting on. She had already explained to me that I should ask him to drop me home by eight because she wouldn’t be able to leave before ten and she didn’t want me staying out that late but I already planned to let Cassidy take me home. There was no way that you were going to catch me basically alone with him in a car. Who knew, he might not have even brought me home.
We walked up to the door but before we could knock the door swung open and he stood before us with a smile.
“Ah it’s so nice to see you Jamison, you too Cassidy.” Cassidy growled at him but that didn’t dampen his spirit even in the least bit. “I see you still have those scars I gave you.” He said with a smirk, he was baiting her, or perhaps just enjoying the night alittle too much. She snapped at him as he point to one of the more noticeable ones; clearly enjoying his work. “My apologies, I think I might have cut you too deep.”
“Hey did we come here to study or what?” Cassidy said, losing her composure. He stepped aside and gestured for us to enter. We both stepped around him cautiously and entered the living room. Once seated I took out my French book and tried looking over a few of the irregular verbs that I had a hard time remembering. Cassidy sat in the couch opposite to me watching my every move. Well atleast she was attentive. He walked into the room and took a seat right next to me. I made up my mind to ignore him so I continued as if he wasn’t there. He leaned in closer and I could now feel his breathing along my neck.
