Chapter 29
Time was growing short and we still couldn’t find Phoenix. By now we had doubled our efforts and were even working through the nights when everyone was instructed to head back to their rooms. I could tell that Demetrius really cared for his sister and I was determined to help him save her. Alexiel had no right to take her child, he had no right to force her into marriage and he definitely had no right to violate her the way he did.
As we entered the main hallway leading to the front entrance Demetrius pulled out his phone. I watched in curiosity as he pulled dialed a number then waited.
“Xavier, I need you and the others to head over to the palace now.” He said.
“But the wedding’s not for another week.” I heard Xavier quip.
Demetrius sighed. “I know that but I need you guys here as soon as possible.”
“Hey is that Demetrius?” I heard Chrystal asking from the background. There was some amount of shuffling followed by:
“Hey Demetrius!”
“ ‘Sup?”
“Do you have it on speaker again?” Demetrius asked curiously.
“Yeah, much more convenient don’t you think?” Xavier asked nonchalantly.
“Well, hurry up and get here.” Demetrius ordered, now focusing on the original intent for the call. “Oh and do me one favour.” He added quickly.
“Sure, what?” Ephraim called over the phone. It still puzzled me how they were able to get such good reception even while being in two different dimensions but I didn’t question it because I had come to realize that there were a lot of things that would never make sense. His facial expression changed slightly as if what he was about to say wasn’t exactly nice but was necessary.
“Don’t bring Kaitlyn; I couldn’t possibly deal with her presence right now—“
“Demetrius—“
“I mean, yes she is my friend and all but she’s just so damn clingy at times that it rides my last nerve—“
“Demetrius—“
I was beginning to think that these were warning hints but he didn’t seem to be getting it as he vented on.
“It’s rather annoying—“
“Demetrius! They all finally shouted in their last, desperate attempt to get him to shut up. I didn’t even know why they were hinting at him to stop but even I was getting frustrated by his oblivious demeanor. Was it even possible for anyone to be that dense?
As he stopped I heard what sounded like a door slamming in the background. Well that couldn’t be good.
“She was in the room the whole time?!” He demanded after hearing the same thing. My guess was that that wasn’t meant for her ears in particular or at all for that matter, though he was speaking the truth. I couldn’t count all the near death experiences I had faced closer to the winter break; she was out to get me I swear. Everytime I so much as looked at him too long she would find a way to put my life at some ridiculously dangerous risk that was more than totally uncalled for. I almost thought that I wouldn’t live to see Christmas! “Why didn’t any of you tell me?!”
“We tried but you wouldn’t shut the hell up.” Zane told him. I couldn’t have agreed more.
He sighed, this time in frustration. “Fix it for me then head over.”
“We’ll try.”
Then he hung up. I looked over to him, not sure what to say at the moment because it was obvious that Kaitlyn had a thing for him and they were both Clandestyne so it would have worked out quite well yet he just ruined his chances with her. He dismissed my look and continued walking, now occupied with finding Phoenix again.
