Chapter 20
Cassidy carried me up her front porch but stopped short of the door. I gave her a puzzled looked trying to understand why we had suddenly stopped when she stepped further away from the door and to the side as if she was expecting something to burst out. Sure enough the front door did burst open and I saw Sarah fly right by.
“Sarah?” I asked more than a little confused. “What are you doing here?”
“getting her ass kicked, what does it look like?” Scarlet, Demetrius’ older sister said as she leaned against the threshold as if throwing Sarah threw the door took little to no effort.
“This isn’t over Demetrius!” She shouted, completely ignoring my presence. Why was she here? She had promised to let it go. “There will be a day when your sisters won’t be here to help you and that’s when I’m going to kill you.” She swore. She shouldn’t have been making threat like that . . .
She glared into the house once more before bolting away.
“I’d like to see her try.” Cassidy said, clearly taking what Sarah had said as a challenge.
“Same here.” Scarlet said, walking back inside. They seemed so calm about it . . . that told me only one thing; they knew that Sarah didn’t stand a chance against them and they were going to use that to their advantage given the opportunity again. If only Sarah would just stop. I didn’t want to see her get hurt . . .she was still my bestfriend no matter what and at the moment she was putting herself in danger.
Cassidy took me inside and the first thing I noticed was Demetrius lying in his couch. He looked so pitiful just lying as if he wasn’t able to move. Why was he doing this to himself—he needed to hunt! I was officially caring because he was destroying himself!
“Mom?” Cassidy called as she looked around. A white cat with grey patches walked into the room and meowed up at her. “Oh, there you are, I need you to call Jamie’s parents and let them know that she’s sleeping over here tonight.” I didn’t think I would ever get used to that; talking to cats. The cat meowed again then ran out of the room.
“Why is she staying over . . .?” Demetrius asked in a frail voice.
“It’s so she can’t be of any danger to herself.” Cassidy answered mater of factly.
He sighed then forced himself into a sitting position. “I’m sure she’s not dumb enough to jump off her balcony a second time.” That’s what he thought—wait what?
“Sure, keep holding on to that fantasy, but for tonight she’s sleeping over.” Cassidy said dismissively, taking my hand and pulling me up the stairs. She took me to her room and told me to make myself comfortable before crawling unto her bed.
“Cassidy isn’t there anything that you can do to make him hunt, he’s getting worse.” I complained. I couldn’t stand seeing him like that—damn my conscience.
“Nope, he’s been a stubborn idiot since birth and nothing will change that. I only fear that somewhere along the line someone will get hurt because of his thirst for blood and craving for flesh. I just hope he breaks before that happens but that’s not very likely . . . I’ve actually never seen him this dedicated to anything so I don’t even know what to expect . . .”
I nodded taking everything that she said into consideration. If he was so dedicated then why did he hurt me like that . . .? How could he have so coldly handed me over . . .?
Later that night I found myself sitting up in Cassidy’s bed as she slept soundly beside me. Apparently even though Clandestynes didn’t need sleep they were still capable of doing it and it actually replenished their energy, not by much of course but then again they never slept to get energy. They saw it more as a way to pass time. I got up and began walking around the room. Cassidy had a lot of jewelry but no makeup; she thought her skin was much too beautiful to be messed with. I walked over to her vanity mirror and began looking into it. I stepped back a little shocked by my appearance. People had every right to say that I looked like a vampire; my eyes had dark circles under them, my skin had grown increasingly pale and I could have sworn that I saw something glisten in my mouth . . .like a canine that was sharper than necessary or something . . .
