“Wanna learn how to steer the ship?”
I looked down confused at Maria. She had popped up out of nowhere.
“What? You know how to drive a ship? And I thought you were taking care of Lana?”
Lana had caught a serious sea sickness.
She nodded at me. “I was, but Kain took over.”
I shrugged my shoulders and nodded my head as I went into thought. It had been about a week since the incident on the beach, my mouth was sick of pickles and eggs, the only thing to eat on this ship. And the only thing to drink was beer. I only took a few sips at a time, but it tasted awesome! I sound like an alcoholic but I’m serious. Kain wasn’t too keen on me taking his beer too, but like everyone else, I had to keep hydrated too.
We passed a pissed looking Rosaline. Maria looked up at her for a second, but that threw her off edge.
“What are you looking at, you little brat?!” She spat, about to slap her.
I was broke out of thought then.
Maria backed into my body for protection. I was about a good foot and a half taller than her.
“Hey! Leave her alone! They’re her eyes! She can look wherever she wants! Just leave us alone! I don’t know what’s stuck up your ass, but I guess it’s pretty high up!” I yelled at Rosalina.
I just couldn’t stand her attitude! It was like sour milk!
She stopped, stunned.
I just grabbed Maria’s shoulder and we walked around the frozen witch.
Once we were far enough, I looked back.
She was gone.
Maria stopped and turned to look back at me. My face was still in a scowl, but Maria’s was smiling.
“Thank you for sticking up for me! I’ve never seen you get really angry before!” She laughed.
I smiled, this girl was insane.
“Ya, ya! Whatever!” I waved her off and we continued walking to the ship’s wheel.
I looked around the ship.
It was big, of course. But, it was very beautiful!
The wood of the ship was painted a dark brown color, the sails were a deep purple and the front of the ship had stairs that led to the wheel.
It was about forty feet wide, and seventy long. I don’t know how deep, but in order to fit all those rooms and things underneath, it had to be big.
The crew slept on the upper deck, and didn’t seem to mind. I got my own room, because I was a girl.
It wasn’t big, but it was reasonable.
The ships Figurehead was a young woman, her hair carved to whip around her face. The face itself in a concentrated state. Her dress was whipping too, clinging to her body as if the wind was blowing.
I got my first look of it when we left beach.
Maria and I climbed the stairs to the wheel, were Pepe was calmly steering the vessel.
“Hey, Pepe.” I waved at him.
He looked at us and nodded, letting go of the wheel for a split second while Maria grabbed it. What? Did he know that she was going to catch it?
“I guess it’s my break now.” He smiled at us, and before he left I grabbed his elbow.
“Hey! Did you know that she was going to teach me how to drive?” I asked him, raising an eyebrow, and he nodded.
“Yes, Senorita! Everyone on the Barco, ship knows how to drive.”
“Just in case.” Maria finished for him, “Come on, Nyrz! Let’s go!”
“Ok! Ok! I’m coming!”
I let go of Pepe and he laughed, leaving us. I climbed to last of the stairs, reminding myself in my head that I needed to work out.
“Alright! Let’s get this party started! Whoop!” I yelled and then blushed, looking down at the startled crew.
“Sorry!” I called out to them and took a deep breath, turning to look at Maria.
“Oh, stop it!” I brushed her shocked face off, and bumped her to the side, instantly taking hold of the wheel.
“This can’t be that hard.” I smiled.
“No! Nyra!”
She didn’t get the words out of her mouth, before the ship was swerving.
I screamed along with Maria as we fell almost over the side of the ship.
“You idiota! Why’d you let go of the wheel?!” She squealed as we went sliding over the surface and bumped over the edge.
“God!” I screamed as we held on to the railing, “Help us!”
Maria was yelling profanities as her hands were sliding.
“I don’t want to die!” I cried out, wondering why nobody had helped us yet.
Shouting from the deck signaled that they knew we were hanging.
My hair was in my face and my legs were dangling.
My hands were slipping and I had never felt as much adrenaline in my life as I had then.
My left arm slipped.
I freaked.
“Mother Trucker! Help us! God dang it! Help us!” I scream from the top of my lungs.
Maria was screaming along side me in Spanish.
I couldn’t understand her, but I knew that she was feeling the same thing.
Then I heard it.
“Nyra!”
Kain?
“Nyra! God! What the hell did you do now?!”
Yes. Yes it was him.
I freaked even more out.
“Kain Sweeny! If you don’t come and get your lazy ass and help us, I’m going to die and come back to haunt your sorry ass!”
My right hand was slipping.
Maria was on her right hand too.
She was blubbering.
“Kain…” She screamed once more.
He was running to us.
I could see him cross the deck out the corner of my eye.
Then, the inevitable happened.
Maria slipped.
Fell.
And before I could think.
I was jumping in after her.
“Nyra!”
I ignored Kain’s distressed cry as I plummeted down.
Determined to save Maria.
But not thinking about my own safety…
