....I wake up on a pile of leaves and flowers. It was like fall and spring all in one. The air was brisk and smelled of apple blossom. I felt better...I can't think of a reason why I would feel bad in the first place, but I felt so at peace. I didn't feel the need to panic even though I was in the middle of the woods. The funny thing was, I didn't feel lost. It was oddly comfortable and familiar. Suddenly, a herd of animals start coming my way. They weren't running toward me, but away from something. There was a look of fear in their eyes as they passed me. Sensing dread, I decided to follow them, to escape whatever they were running from. I quickly became reluctant when I saw that they were all fearlessly running into a blinding white light. How could they go some place where they didn't even know what was on the other side? As I contemplate my next step, I start to hear my name being called, not a scream but not yet a whisper.
"Lana..."
"Lana..."
Just as I felt comfortable enough to follow the voice, my heart almost stopped when it screamed my name.
"LANA!!"
My body pops up as I take in the heaviest breath of air, as if oxygen was something new to me. My eyes jump wide open. My heart is still pumping a mile a minute, but my brain allows my eyes to see whats around me. I'm not in the woods anymore. No more animals. No more apple blossoms. Just the smell of...applesauce and death. I'm in a hospital.
My eyes finally fall onto this stunned figure. He's sitting at the side of the bed, my hand in his. We just stare at each other. Speaking, at the moment, seems foreign to me. Apparently to him too. I don't know him, but he must know me...right? Why else would he be here. Then why isn't he saying anything? Shouldn't he be comforting me?
"You're awake!" He finally says.
"Wha---" I try to say. My voice is not my own. Its hoarse and unrecognizable.
"Hold on." He quickly disappears. He comes back with with a glass of water. "Hope you don't mind tap." Cautiously, I take the cup. Tap never tasted so good!
I down the whole cup before I say anything else. "What happened to me?"
"You don't remember anything?"
"No." I respond bluntly.
"The doctor said you probably wouldn't..." He says, almost a whisper.
"What happened?" I ask, this time more firmly.
His eyes turn glassy. "You were in a car accident. You were about to drive home but another person lost control of their car on the ice and it slammed into yours."
