The company had settled down for the night, after a good dinner. Fili and Kili were sitting against a rock face smoking. Bilbo was up and talking with his pony, Myrtle. Coalbi was staring into the fire, which had died down, with a blank expression.
The orange haired female slowly reached her hand into the fire and grabbed a hot coal. Fili and Kili were about to say something when the female started spinning the coal. The coal slowly spun in the smooth palm of the female. She spun the hot coal again but this time flicked it up into the air after.
The coal burst into a small ball of fire and twisted into a dragon. The brothers, and now Bilbo, watched in fascination as Coalbi moved the fire dragon in the air with her fingers. Suddenly a shriek was heard in the distance and the dragon disappeared. Coalbi's head snapped to where the sound came from.
"W-what was that?" Bilbo asked in slight fear of the answer.
"That would be orcs. The lowlands will be crawling with them." Coalbi glared at Fili.
"They strike in the wee hours. No sound just lots of blood." Coalbi turned her glare to the other brother. Orcs were no laughing matter. Bilbo looked frightened.
"Do you think a night raid by orcs is funny?" Thorin questioned harshly. Fili and Kili looked down slightly.
"We meant nothing by it." Kili said quietly.
"Of course not! You nothing of the world!" Coalbi growled and stood up. She walked in the opposite side of the camp, closer to the edge.
She listened to the story of the battle at Moria with mild interest. For Coalbi herself had seen the battle. So much blood and dead bodies after. Just thinking about the battle made Coalbi depressed. Too many had been lost in that battle.
Coalbi heard the end of the story but didn't look up. She was stuck in her dark dreary thoughts of past battles with orcs. She just barely heard the footsteps of someone. They sat next to her quietly. Coalbi shook her head with a silent sigh.
"What has got you down?" Came the question from a voice Coalbi knew she wouldn't forget.
"Too much thinking, not enough living." Was the only reply.
"What are ya thinkin about?" Bofur asked curiously. Coalbi shook her head and looked out over the forest.
"Past battles." Coalbi answered with a short reply before she stood up. "Good night Bofur." She said and went back to her bed roll, not wanting to talk.
The bed roll was set up far away from the fire and next to a tree. Donny was sleeping next to it with his large head on the blanket. Coalbi walked over and was about to sit down when something caught her attention.
A leather bound book was sitting next to Donny's head. It was the same book she had seen Ori carrying around. He never let it out of his hand, so it was a true mystery why it was there. Coalbi picked up the book and opened it up.
The pages were filled with words and pictures. The words were of the trip the company is taking and the pictures of random things. Though many of the pictures were of Mercury, the dragon Ori dreams about, in many different ways.Coalbi closed the book quietly and walked to where Ori was snuggled between his older brothers. She placed the book in his arms. Ori stirred but didn't wake up. Coalbi was about to turn and go back to her bed roll, but she caught Thorin watching her.
She walked over to him quietly."Yes?" She asked, referring to when he was staring. Thorin cast his look over to Ori where she just was.
"What is your relationship with little Ori?" Thorin asked, skeptical of her.
"Friends." Coalbi said. She was about to go back to Donny when a hand caught her wrist. "I wish to keep him safe."
"When Balin was telling the story of the Moria battle. Your face showed a look like you were there, how is that possible?" Thorin asked.
"I was there Thorin. Watching the battle from afar. There were too many deaths that battle." Coalbi said quietly so not to wake anyone.
"You could not have been there," Thorin said. Coalbi sighed took his hand from her wrist.
"Good night Thorin Oakenshield." She said and went to her bed roll.
She laid down, after scooting the giant head off, and cuddled with Donny. The giant wolf wedged his head under her arm. Coalbi laughed when the wet nose touched her side. Donny knew where his master's weak spots are.
Coalbi pushed his head away and tried to fall asleep. But Donny was persistent and she finally sat up. She sent the large wolf a sharp look. Donny just pointed his head towards the fire. Coalbi looked over and saw Ori sitting up looking distressed.
Coalbi swiftly stood up and went over. Ori looked up at her. She crouched in front of him and put a hand on his shoulder.
"What is it Ori?" Coalbi asked. Ori looked up to her eyes before flicking down to his older brothers.
"I can't sleep and these two really don't leave any room." Ori explained quietly. Coalbi let out a small chuckle and stood up.
She motioned Ori do the same and grab his stuff. They walked back to Donny and laid out Ori's bed roll. Coalbi laid next Donny and now Ori.
"Thank you for letting me sleep next to you." Ori thanked her quietly. Coalbi turned to him and sent a smile.
"Its no problem. Though you might get cold here." Coalbi said. Ori looked back at the fire then Coalbi.
"I think I'll be fine." Ori said and Coalbi nodded.
She closed her eyes and was about to sleep. When she felt something pressed against her back. She looked over her shoulder to see a slightly shivering Ori. Coalbi flicked her finger and Donny went to lay next to young dwarf. She turned so she faced Ori and gently blew on him. Her warm breath making Ori warm and Donny was keeping it there.
Coalbi sighed and curled her body like Donny. Ori was now surrounded by warmth and quit shivering. Coalbi sighed and finally let sleep take her.
