Chapter 9: I Promise
Once again, I woke up to the familiar shine of flouesent lights. When I woke up, I wasn't quite sure what happened, but then I felt a stinging feeling in my wrists.
I looked down to see my left wrist heavily wrapped in bandages and I wondered what happened. That was the second time I was in the hospital in three weeks.
I looked around the room to find it empty, so I just laid there waiting for someone to come in. Sure enough, a doctor came in a few minutes later.
"We meet again, Ms. Sanders," the familiar voice said.
I nodded assuming it was the same doctor that I'd met before.
"What happened this time?" I asked.
He sighed. "You cut yourself." he replied.
I scrunched my eyebrows. I did? I didn't recall anything about that.
"And the cuts were pretty deep. If it hadn't been for your neighbors, we don't know how you would've turned out. You almost sliced a vein." he told me.
I cringed.
I seriously didn't remember anything at all. This is the second time that someone's had to save me, and I didn't like it, but at the same time I was grateful.
"Who found me?" I asked.
"A young man by the name of Colin Smith. Sound familiar?" he asked.
My stomach clenched. Colin. He was the one who found me.
"Is it ok if I talk to him?" I asked.
The doctor nodded, and before he left the room I asked him if he could help me sit up and he did.
A few moments later, Colin came walking in the door with a hoodie and some sweats on, hands in his pockets.
"Hey," I spoke.
"How are ya feelinng?" he asked
"Not so grand. What happened?" I asked, still wanting to know.
He sighed and pulled up a chair next to the hospital bed.
"I don't exactly know. All I know is that I heard a scream coming from the direction of your room, but the door was locked and I couldn't get in." he paused.
"The scream was terrifying. It sounded like someone was ripping off your fingernails, one by one. I got really worried so I called the police. They got there rather quickley and they knocked down your door, and when I found you lying unconcious on the floor of your kitchen with a bloody knife in your hand, I though..I though I lost you." he said.
I sat there in silence, taking it all in. Had I really done that? I can't remember anything that I possibly could've done to lead me to almost killing myself.
I was brought out of my thoughts when I heard a quiet sniffle. I turned my head to see Colin sitting with his head in his hands.
I saw the slightest shake of his shoulders every now and then, then I decided to speak.
"Colin," I said softly.
Ever so slowly, he lifted his head up until his eyes met mine.
My heart melted at what I saw.
His eyes were red and puffy and there were tears in the corner of his eyes.
He was crying.
Over me.
Colin Smith was crying over me. I wanted to get up and grab his face and kiss the sense out of him, but I knew I couldn't.
He gently laughed. "I'm sorry. I probably look so stupid to you right now." he shook his head and inhaled.
"You don't look stupid. No guy has ever cried over me before." I told him honestly.
Without warning, Colin rose from his seat, walked over to my bed, and hugged me.
As soon as he wrapped his arms around me, I felt instantly better.
I felt..protected. He hugged me for a while, and I wasn't complaining. Plus he smelled really good which was totally a bonus.
After he let go, I felt cold.
However, he didn't leave the room. He was staring at something with an intense gaze. I followed his eyes to see they were staring at the bandages on my wrist.
I suddenly felt self-concious and stupid for doing it, even though I couldn't control myself. I probably looked weak in his eyes. I tried bringing my arms under the thin hospital sheets so that he would stop staring, but he had a different idea.
He gently grabbed my arm before I could hide them, then he brought my wrist up near his face.
He enveloped both of his hands around my one hand, then he brought my wrist to his lips and placed a gentle kiss on the bandages, never breaking eye contact with me.
"Please. Promise me that you'll never do this to yourself again, ever." he said gently.
My eyes were locked into his deep blue eyes and I was so zoned in that I felt paralized.
I tried nodding but that didn't work.
"I promise." I replied.
We kept our eyes locked for about a minute longer, and I'm not even sure I blinked once. It was like a pssionate, meaningful staring contest.
He gently placed my arm back at my side and slowly turned to leave the room.
"Wait," I said right before he got to the door. He turned around.
"Thanks. Thank you so much," I said. I really, really meant it.
He smiled then turned back around and left.
I was still in a daze from what had just happened and a moment later the doctor came back in.
He told me that I was going to be sighed up for therepy and he gave me a list of counsilers to choose from.
He told me that the sooner I got help, the better. I really didn't want that to happen again, and I really did want to keep my promise to Colin because when I make a promise, I always keep that promise.
The doctor left once again and the nurse came in with the icky hospital food that they always serve, but I somehow managed to scarf it down.
I had to stay for the rest of the night because my wrist was so badly damaged that they had to do some work on it, and they said they weren't exactly sure how long it would take.
Before I drifted off to sleep, I remembered the promise I made with Colin.
"Please. Promise me that you'll never do this to yourself again, ever."
"I promise."
