Chapter 14

We are all standing outside of the warehouse with everyone that passes giving us dirty looks. While we were packing our stuff Rex explained to us that one of the perks of being a super powered team is that people kind of worship them and like to give them gifts. One of the things that they were given is their own penthouse apartment in one of the most expensive high rises in the city and that was going to be our new home. Skip went ahead to find us a ride into the city so knowing that he wouldn’t be able to teleport us all there at once.

After waiting outside for ten minutes or so a large all black SUV comes down the road with Skip popping out of the sun roof. Once Sadie, Buddy and I got over the initial shock that this is how Alpha team really traveled we all pile into the spacious vehicle. While Rex and the rest of Alpha team enjoy the refreshments that were provided the rest of us are hoping that their plan to live in this new place is a good one.

After a half hour of driving we finally make it into the city where there are many people and tall buildings everywhere. We end up stopping in front of one of the tallest buildings I have seen and we all get out. “Okay guys well this is it” Rex says and he starts to head for the door. Before we can even get a foot there is a high pitched scream and I get into a quick fighting stance but instead of seeing bad guys I see a sea of girls running towards us. In a matter of seconds there is a large group of teenaged girls surrounding Alpha team asking for their autographs and taking pictures. Slowly pushing our way towards the building door Rex and his brothers get in last minute pictures and even get slipped a few phone numbers. When we finally make it to the door a portly doorman is now in our way,” hey Tony how ya been?”

“Hello Rex sir, I’ve been doing okay except for this darn back of mine” the man says putting a hand on his lower back.

“How about some acupuncture?” Spike says to him with a devilish smile.

“No thanks Spike I think I’ll pass on that”.

“So Tony as you can see we have some guests with us and if anyone comes to see us tell them that we aren’t here okay?” Rex says to the doorman.

“No problem Rex and anything you guys need just call down and I’ll see what I can do” he says giving us a big smile. Walking with Tony the doorman further into the lobby we stop at an elevator that says “PRIVATE”. Tony pulls out a key that opens that door and we all get in and the elevator ascends.

When it finally stops and the doors open we are greeted by an enormous room that is even more luxurious then our suite at H.O.M.E. “We have plenty of rooms here for all of us to live comfortably and unlike your last place there are no rats” Rex says to us. We make our way to a large living room where Spike and Spot relax on huge black couches that are facing the biggest flat screen TV that I have ever seen. Buddy and I are just about to put down our bags and join them when Sadie starts talking.

“Do you really think that it is smart for us to stay in a place like this? I mean Mom is surely going to check for you guys here once she figures out that you ran away too” she says looking at Rex.

Rex just looks at her and laughs,” yeah and even if she does know that we are here who is she going to send? With both teams out of her control she doesn’t have anyone to send that will be any match for all of us.”

“He is right Sadie as long as we are all together Mom can’t really get to us now” Buddy says to her sitting on the couch. Sadie doesn’t say anything back to them she just puts down her bag and start to look around. “So Rex where is the kitchen in this place?” Buddy asks looking around.

“Actually we don’t have like an actually kitchen all we have is a fridge where we keep like drinks and stuff. If you want some food though all you have to do is call down to Tony and he will bring it right up. The really nice thing too is that since they kind of treat us like rock stars we never have to pay” Rex tells him.

Buddy doesn’t even answer he just dashes over to the phone and starts ordering food. Laughing at Buddy’s insatiable hunger I realize that Rex isn’t in the living room anymore. I look around and see that Spike and Skip are still watching TV while Sadie is standing in front of a window that shows a great view of the city. I toss my bag down and head down a hallway looking for him.

I walk down the hallway and stumble upon large French doors that are slightly propped open. I push my way in and see that it is a large room that greatly resembles the training room at H.O.M.E. I look around when something on the far wall catches my eye and I walk over to see half the wall is covered in different weapons. I have seen most of these in the training room at the compound but others look either really old or really futuristic. Running my fingers over one of the blades I hear a voice behind me,” be careful you don’t cut yourself.” I jump around to see Rex standing in the doorway.

“Sorry I didn’t mean to snoop I was actually just looking for you. I wanted to thank you for not only joining us but also for letting us stay here.”

“No problem man what’s mine is yours and actually I was just about to get in a little workout if you wanted to join me.”

“Yeah I think I would be up for that I have to warn you though last time I spared I took down Sadie pretty quickly.”

“Ha well even though she is tough I think I will be a little more of a challenge” he says walking past me and picking up the sword I was just looking at and starts twirling it super-fast.

“Wow how did you learn to do that?”

“Well with my power it isn’t always so practical in a fight so I became well versed in most fighting styles and with different weapons.”

“That is super cool I wish I could do stuff like that” I say to him kind of jealous.

“Well the best way to learn is by facing off against someone better then you” he says as he throws me a sword. I nod and we move to the main part of the room where there is more space.

I try to get a feel for the sword but never wielding one before I’m not really sure how well this is going to go. When Rex gives me a nod and starts to circle around me I figure I will get the hang of it during the fight and I start to circle as well. After a full lap around Rex finally lunges in at me but I am able to dodge his attack. I try one of my own but Rex is too quick and easily blocks it. Now only a foot away Rex starts to slash at me while all I can do is block his attempts even though he ends up cutting me slightly. I get in a few strikes on him but nothing that he can’t block or dodge until he ends up knocking me down.

As I get up I realize that not only is Rex very skilled with the sword but he also just has brute strength that I can’t match so if I want to win I will have to try something different. I lift my sword in the air and charge at him making an obvious intention of my move. Rex is about to block it like I planned and before our swords meet I send electricity up through my hands and into my sword. When the swords meet the electricity goes from mine to his and he drops it on the ground. “That was a very smart way of trying to overpower me but now that means I’m just going to have to go 100%” Rex says pick up his sword and charging at me. I hold up my sword to block him but right before he get to me I see his legs change suddenly into his Trex ones and he jumps over my head. Before I can turn around I feel his sword slash at my hand and I drop my sword and before I can pick it back up Rex has it in his hand.

Now waving two swords around Rex starts to slowly come towards me,” ya know I wasn’t going to use my power but since you used yours first I figured it was only fair.” I slowly back away knowing that I don’t have many options since I am now unarmed. With my mind drawing a blank on options how to win this I drop to my knees and raise my hands in the air. “Wow I thought you would have at least one more trick up your sleeve.”

“Nope, I know when I am beat and I am able to accept that.”

            “Well for your first time using a sword I have to say that you did a pretty decent job” he says to me as he helps me to my feet. “I think that if you work with me every day on your skills we can get you almost as good as me.”

            “I think that sounds like a great idea Rex thanks.”

            “No problem Gizmo now let’s go see if Buddy left any food for us” Rex says with a deep laugh.
