Today was the day.
Well, the day I was going to win the bet, that is.
Tonight was the spring fling dance. This past week I was able to get the rest of the guys marked off my list except for three, one of whom was Noah. The other two ended up not having dates to the dance, so tonight I would win to matter what.
The whole thing was getting Noah to not realize who I am. I took the measures of getting a mask that would cover most of my face, so hopefully he wouldn’t know it’s me. The only real problem was getting him away from Emma, but I hoped that would be easy.
Sam was picking me up tonight. We weren’t going to the dance together as dates, but this was as close as it can be to one. He asked me, but I said no because I didn’t want guys not wanting to kiss me since I had a date. This bet meant more to me than having a date to the dance.
I looked at myself in the mirror. It wasn’t a super formal dance or anything, so I wore a dress that was easily under thirty dollars. I didn’t care how I looked—I hated dances. I just needed to look good enough that guys would want to kiss me.
I heard the doorbell ring and was about to walk downstairs until I almost forgot to put my mask on. Once I had it on my face, I looked in the mirror and realized that Noah was right. You would know exactly who I was because my green eyes shown under the black of my outfit. Hopefully under the dark lights of the dance he wouldn’t notice.
I finally made my way downstairs to where Sam was awkwardly standing while my parents hovered over him like he was a newborn baby. I laughed and he looked up, his eyes shining as a small, shy smile lit up his face. Ty, who wasn’t going to the dance because he was ‘too cool for it’ snorted when he saw my friend’s reaction.
“Well, we should probably get going,” I said right as soon as I made it down. “We’re almost late—“
“What about pictures, Melody?” my mother asked. “This is your last spring fling and I need pictures—“
“Mom, this dance is nothing special. And we really need to go, I’ll get you pictures there!”
My mom pursed her lips but didn’t say anything more. I already told her and my dad that Sam wasn’t my date, just someone taking me there, so there shouldn’t be any need for pictures. My dad cut in now, “Be home by midnight.”
I scowled. “Dad! It’s my last dance.”
He looked at me before sighing. “Fine. Be back here by two or spend the night at Noah’s, and by Noah’s I mean at his house. No one else’s,” he made a point of looking at Sam who turned bright red. It was a normal thing for me to spend the night at Noah’s. We’ve been at each other’s houses since we were little. It wasn’t any different now that we were older since everyone knows that we’re just friends. Due to the fact that I was probably going to be hitting up the parties after I win the bet, I didn’t want to come home drunk so I would probably end up at Noah’s. It’s better that way: his parents don’t bother us and aren’t able to smell a drink from a mile away like mine can.
