The next day I spent doing the homework that Sam had given me. The only problem was that I was still really mad at Noah. When I get angry, I stay angry. I grunted and basically attacked the paper with my pencil as I did another math problem.
I also had time to get a little visit with Holly in again. She looked surprised at my visit, considering that I just saw her yesterday, but I needed someone to talk to, and Holly was good at listening. I vented to her again but everything with Sam and Noah while she patiently waited through it all, bobbing her bald head when necessary. When I was done, I listened to her ideas about Spring Fling. She wanted a very specific dress, and makeup. She claimed that since she didn’t have hair, she was going to have to have the most perfect face at the whole dance.
It wouldn’t be hard for a girl like Holly. She had the Freely genes, and was gorgeous. I wish I was like that.
After I left (she had a radiation that she needed to go to, and I knew it was going to take awhile so I didn’t need to stay), I got home and found myself still angry at Holly’s brother and my supposedly best friend. I knew I was mainly freaking out over nothing, but I don’t know what has come over me all of a sudden.
Maybe it had to do with the fact that the guy didn’t even talk to me yesterday. He didn’t call, text, or come over. Did he seriously think I would be okay with him ditching me for Emma on our day? I’m Melody, his best friend. He should know that I’m the type to get worked up about things like this.
Around noon, after I had just finished lunch, he finally called. I rolled my eyes and rejected it quickly. I really don’t want to hear about how fun his date was with Emma. Instead, I went and played some video games—of which I hated—with Caleb. In the middle of the game, he turned to me. He had trouble paying attention to things, it had to do with his ADD or something.
“Is Noah coming over today?” He asked me, while adjusting his glasses on the bridge of his nose. They always fell down, no matter how many times we had them fixed. His nose just wasn’t meant to have eyeglasses on them. It also didn’t help out his whole ‘nerd’ image he had to the older bullies in his grade, but there was honestly nothing more we could do about fixing them.
I clenched my jaw, “No.”
“But why? I really want to see him.”
“He’s not coming, Caleb.” I tried paying attention to the game but my fingers clenched the controller so hard, I couldn’t push the buttons that well.
“Can you please invite him—“
“Caleb!” I yelled and he flinched back at my escaladed voice. “He’s not coming over, okay? He doesn’t have to come over every day!”
I didn’t wait to see my brother’s reaction before I grabbed my sister’s keys and stomped out the house. She had a kid. She didn’t need a car at this moment. I turned on the engine and peeled out of my neighborhood. I can’t say that I had one of those fast-getaways, rolling down the street over twenty miles-per-hour past the speed limit. No, I still had boundaries… and a fear of car accidents that completely made sense considering what had happened to me and the result of that.
