I'M TERRIBLY SORRY FOR THE LONG WAIT

“Melly.”
I groaned and tried shifting to my side, but a weight on my chest wouldn’t let me.
“Auntie Melly!”
I grabbed my pillow and threw it over my face. Into it I yelled, “Get off of me, Leah.”
“Melly! Melly! Melly! Melly!” With every time she said her version of my name, my niece jumped up and down on my stomach. She hit a certain spot and I felt all the breath huff out of my body and I coughed. I threw the pillow off of me and glared at my niece who sat there with a cute little smile like she was completely innocent.
“Leah, why aren’t you with your mom?”
“Mommy says you go to school!”
“Well mommy needs to be quiet,” I muttered and helped her off of my bed. “Go eat some cookies or something.” She smiled, showing off all of her teeth, and ran out of the room quickly.
Today was Monday morning and I was due at school an hour ago. Of course I didn’t want to go and have to face Noah, Sam, Allyson, and even Emma. I planned to skip, but apparently my sister wasn’t going to let that happen.
I got up and stared angrily at my door as my sister yelled at me to go to school already. Knowing that she would make up some crazy thing and tell our parents it, I had to get going. After ten minutes of putting on a look that made me look like a high-class hobo, I pulled on my backpack and started the walk to school.
It wasn’t a long walk or anything, but it took me way longer than it would if I had any motivation to actually go. I went into the school and the hallways were empty because classes were going on. I went to the office, signed in, and headed to my second period. This was the class I had with Noah, so I kept my head down when I walked in.
“Melody Evans,” my teacher announced. “How nice of you to join us.”
I gave her a fake smile and tossed my late pass on her desk before moving to my seat. I was surprised to see that Noah wasn’t even there. He wasn’t one to miss school often, and when he did it was usually with me. I looked at Sam from across the room but his eyes were glaring down at his desk.
The class went by excruciatingly slow. I needed to talk to Sam, find out the real issue, but when the bell went off, so did he. I would probably have to wait until lunch to find a way to talk to him. So until then, I sat in my classes and barely took in what my teachers were teaching the class.
It was completely unlike me, and up until that moment I hadn’t realized that I had been doing it for weeks. I was taking in little to nothing in my classes and I’m surprised that I wasn’t on the brink of failing.
By the time lunch came around I was about ready to rip my hair out in frustration. As soon as the bell rang, I was up and out of my seat. I headed for Sam’s locker first and when he wasn’t there I went straight to where we sat in the cafeteria. He wasn’t there either, so I huffed out in frustration and searched through the school for the boy.
