"Thank you to everyone for this very hard working trimester and I wish you luck for your future and most especially for your exams. Have a nice mid term break. " Our English teacher say so, as the bell rings an everyone grabs their bags and head for the door.
"Hey, Carrie." I pack my books and head to the main door and everyone is running and walking away from the school, I stand and call my mom, waiting for a reply. Suddenly I hear a voice, close to me, speaking to me. It was an unrecognisable voice.
"Hello?" I say in a weird tone.
"Hi, I'm Hailey. I was told I'd see you at this school, that you attend this school. I've been wanting to speak to you for a long time but I couldn't get hold of you and so I never got the opportunity. May we speak? "
"As long as you do it outside ladies, come on. School is over, go home. " the janitor says across the hall.
I look at her, studying her face as she follows me outside the school gate. Dark skin, curly and knotted brown hair with light hazeled eyes, which seems like they can hypnotise. Tall and confident with a sense of pride an honour when she walks. But her face, sincere and apologetic, almost sad. She's wearing a grey jumpsuit and a white blouse with black heels. She looks sophisticated and formal. And i look like a teen murderer.
The walk was silent and I didn't expect a conversation but knowing now that she wanted to speak to me this whole time, made me question, why now? At the end of a school day and a beginning of a mid term break. This couldn't be better.
I stop walking at the side of the road and faced her. "Yes, you were saying you needed to speak to me?"
"Well, you might be wondering what I could offer you at this time but my name is Hailey Aku and I have some news.
"Okay? What's this about? " I cross my arms not understanding what to do.
"You are the daughter of Chris Sitle and...so am I. I'm your half sister. "
Those words slightly sink into me, my vision in a blur and my legs wobbled inside me not knowing what to do. I try focus myself on what she said and try to consider some theories. She looks much older than me and different. I could not recognise my father's face and I couldn't see it in her. She stands waiting for a response but im standing here, speechless. For so many years I wanted nothing to do with that man, for so long he made me feel like I was responsible, like we all were. But it was him, it was his mistakes. I don't even think i remember a good memory of him. None. That was how erased and gone he was from my life but I get this news saying she is my half sister.
"Carrie, I- I want you to know that your father was a good man, he loved you and he loved us."
I try to speak but it feels like someone was blocking my throat and I couldn't spill one word. Water starts filling up my eyes but I push them away. I control my emotions and try and focus on what's happening but eventually can't. I feel a drop run down my cheek and instantly wipe it away.
"I know it's hard but I want you to listen. " She walks to me slowly and her hands reaching out.
"No! no. Don't you ever speak to me again." I push her hand away and start to walk really fast. I grab my bag up and tighten it to my arm. It's starts to rain and I hear her call back my name, I choose to ignore it. I don't want anything to do with that man or with her, I've gone through many troubles and this will not be part of it. The rain flows with my tears and it only became harder.
My legs begin to hurt, the fault of living far away from your house. Her words are spinning in my head and I find myself waking in the middle of the road when suddenly a car honked and I instantly jump and run across the road. I choose to stay and rest and look for the nearest telephone booth. Then entering the box, I press our home number. No one answers just as how I'd imagined it to be and it only became dark. I look for change In my bag started looking for a taxi. I could bribe them to drop me close enough since I didn't have that much money. So when that happens I could start walking again. But no signs of a taxi anywhere. I look through my contacts and see Dan's number. I take a silent pause but decide not to call him, this shouldn't be his problem. It should only be mine.
I paced walk to my house till I could safely breathe and walk. I place the goodie of my jacket down and start unlocking the doors. Drying my shoes on the carpet I hear the kettle boiling, I walk to the kitchen and see her. I see her and mom sitting opposite each other, waiting. For what seemed like forever. I reckon her name was Hailey, Hailey Aku. The woman who said we are related, that we share the same father.
I look over at my mom who looks like she was expecting this. She knew this happened. It must've been a woman he was with before he married my mom. She shows no expression. She must've known all these years and kept it a secret, as shocked as i am, I don't believe the next word that comes out of her, mouth.
"Carrie, sit down. " mom instructs. She pulls the chair for me to sit exactly in front of her. In front of my so called sister.
"As to what Hailey told me, you two have met earlier and you refused to believe she is your half sister. True? "
She looks at me, waiting for a response. I look at Hailey, fingers folded and she's looking down.
"Yes. " I answer.
"Afterwards, you got emotional and walked away, correct?"
"Mom, don't treat me like your clients. I understand you're a lawyer but I need a normal conversation. " I speak directly at her face. And she understood. Her face doesn't look surprised. Just a normal, neutral face.
She's probably thinking typical teenagers and their mood swings."Carrie, i- I just wanted you to know... I I'm your half sister. " Hailey says.
"I get it. But i don't believe you. " I say looking directly into her eyes. I push my chair back and start and walk upstairs to my room.
I wasn't going to take all that crap. Just when my vacation began, I have a new problem to solve. I'll handle it tomorrow.
Not today.
But tomorrow.
