"I cannot believe this is really happening, Nick." Neal shifts uncomfortably beside Nick in the flight. "Didn't you and Dad keeps tabs with her handler at her office?"
"I really don't want to talk. If you cannot shut up, please find a seat elsewhere." Nick warns him.
"Look, I am sorry. I don't want to bug you. But, I am about to ask you a very awkward question."
"Pleaaaaaase. Don't"
"Is there a chance that those kids are yours?"
"LIKE I SAID!!" Nick snaps a nerve. "Forget it." he gets up and requests a change of seat for himself as Neal looks at him shaking his head disappointed. His brother had changed in the last few years. Superficially, all was cool and sundry but underneath all those masks, he was a changed person. He could not remember the last time he had an honest talk with him. He was all about specifics. He was all about getting the job done. Never in his life had he thought he would see his cool older brother so shallow and standoffish.
Nick looks out of the window as a familiar scare runs through him like the dark clouds eclipsing the moon. He remembers that night when in front of the whole town, at his parents twenty third marriage anniversary, he had proposed to her with all the grand works.
It was so romantic, like something out of a every teenage girl's dream. There was music. There was family and there were smiles and laughs everywhere. More importantly, Nick Vadera was in front of her, bent on his knee, making the most romantic proposal with a promise of a life time of happiness and excitement.
"Wow, look at that rock, soon to be Mrs. Nikhil Singh Vadera." he comments proudly at his own selection as she lay in his arms that night. He was looking at the ring, raising her hand in his, lifting it against the moon that shone from the window beside their bed.
"Let's get married soon. I can't wait now."
"Nick!" she laughs.
"I am serious!"
"I am already yours. I am lying beside you, in your arms, in your bed, in your house. How is this going to be any different if we get married."
"Well, for starters, you will call it our bed, our house and refer to me as your husband."
"Husband?" she blushes crimson.
"Yuuuup." he looks at her smitten.
"This is beautiful, Nick. I didn't need such a big diamond. I feel guilty." she blushes looking at her ring finger.
"You deserve the best, baby. I don't tell you enough about how amazing you are. The way you handle me and my chaos!!!"
"I would have said yes if you had proposed to me with a brass ring."
"Whaaaaaaat? Are you mad? Nikhil Vadera is going to worship you, like a goddess." he whispers against her lips.
"Goddess is out of action tonight." she stops him from kissing her.
"Excuse me?" his brows shoot up in panic.
"I am out of my prescription. Sorry." she smiles naughtily, fully knowing the fit he is going to throw.
"That's fine." he smiles calmly.
"What is?" her voice raises in panic this time.
"We can afford it. We are engaged."
"Afford what exactly?"
"Being a little careless." he winks.
"Huh? And if I get pregnant?"
