Loud dance music was infiltrating every cell in my body while I tried to focus on what was happening in front of me. After our first drinks, Dot disappeared because she'd found someone she knew while Anthea was making sure we'd never had an empty glass in our hands.
She felt completely at home, letting her body flow with the music. I didn't even know it was possible to dance in the dress she was wearing. Jane didn't want to be here, I could sense it even though she was drinking along with us, occasionally making small talk with people she knew.
And me? I was playing with the straw I got with my drink. I couldn't stop looking at all the people dancing, having a great time. Here I was, standing in the same room as those people yet still envious because I wasn't having as much fun as they were.
"Have you seen anyone you like?" Anthea said close to my ear, so I'd hear her. She must've been thinking I was scouting the area like a predator.
"Ehh... everyone seems so occupied?" I answered hesitantly. It's not like I spotted a guy just standing by himself and even if I did, I wouldn't have the guts to go up to them. What would I say anyway? Hey, I'm single, not exactly ready to mingle but forcing myself to at least put myself out there, wanna take a spin? I shuddered just thinking about that imaginary conversation that would never, and I mean never, happen in my actual life.
"Alright, shout when you're ready to do a round." Anthea replied.
"A round?" I asked. I wasn't sure I'd heard her.
"Yeah, we'll go more towards the crowd and before you know it, a lot of horndogs and a few hotties will start to notice us. How can they not? We look hot tonight!" Anthea yelled and took a swig from her drink.
She was right, we looked good. I hadn't felt this sexy since... ever. The only thing holding me back from having fun were those stupid insecure feelings Chris had planted into my brain. He'd made me feel like I wasn't good enough. He was the one creeping his way into my fun night. He didn't have the right to do that. Not anymore. I emptied my glass in one go and told Anthea I was ready for her round. Whatever that entailed.
Jane wasn't coming with us, she was talking to a student she knew. Too bad it wasn't Seth though but I couldn't really picture him being here. He seemed like he was too cool to go to these kind of parties. He'd go to a bar or some secret rave you had to have an invitation for. He did seem like one of those people who knew other people, you know? You wanted someone to get you exam answers? Seth would know a guy. You wanted someone dead? Call Seth, he knows people.
Anyway, I think Jane didn't want to witness everything. She'd made it clear she didn't like this. Before Anthea grabbed my hand and pulled me into the crowd, she handed me another drink.
Once we were in the middle of the room, it didn't seem as crowded as I'd thought. There was still enough room to dance freely without being squashed by sweaty bodies.
"So what do we do now?" I asked Anthea.
She grinned and her eyes sparkled with excitement. "Now we have fun!" She exclaimed and moved to the beat of the music. I wasn't as comfortable with dancing as Anthea. In fact, I felt really awkward and I had a mini heart attack whenever it seemed like I was gonna spill my drink but eventually a few songs came on that I liked and I started to get more into it.
I forgot about all the people in the room and pretended I was at home, dancing in my living room. I was an extremely talented dancer in my living room. I'd won countless awards and had given amazing speeches with my hairbrush serving as a mic. I was also a talented actress, singer and model in my living room with only Ash as my witness.
