It had been a slow day at school but at least I'd gotten an A on my paper so I was feeling pretty confident about that. I couldn't share my victory with Jane because when I came home, she wasn't there. I almost considered hanging it on the fridge so she'd see it when she got home. Then I realised she wasn't my parent and out of sheer embarrassment, I threw the paper on my desk. I shot a quick picture of the grade on my phone and sent it to my parents. To reward me, they'd probably send me a cute puppy picture. Although, Fiddle seemed to be growing each day.
I only had time for a quick bite and then I had to leave for work. I'd bought some cronuts earlier and my stomach had been awaiting their arrival impatiently since the moment I'd bought them. I loved how people at one point where asking themselves what was better; a donut or a croissant. Then there was probably this really indecisive person who suggested to make a donut-croissant hybrid. That person is probably my hero. I opened the cupboard but instead of the delicious cronuts, I found a little note with my name on it.
I grabbed the note and unfolded it.
Thanks for the cro, Lu. I'll make it up to you! -J
I knew Jane had stolen my cronuts! To be fair, I constantly munched on her cereal so I guess we were even. I decided to go to work a little early. If I was lucky, there'd still be some pie left. For some reason, pie was a necessity for Amanda. As if pie would solve all her problems. The weird thing is, she never ate it. It was more of a decoration, like flowers.
A pie made you feel more at home, it was cosy and represented a nice team atmosphere. I thought it was a lot of responsibility for a poor pie. However, all of the employees loved eating a piece of pie so it was fine.
Fortunately for me, there were still two pieces left. Although, I caught Seth looking at it like a hungry lion, ready to attack its prey.
"Freeze!" I said on instinct, right as he was about to mangle the thing with his fork. Seth stopped what he was doing and looking in my direction. He then dropped the fork and raised both his hands above his head.
"I swear, I didn't do it! She was already dead when I found her." Seth replied with a fake panicked look on his face.
"Alright, I'll believe you this time." I said suspiciously as I took a few more steps towards the pie.
"Damn, I was looking forward to eating everything. I forgot my lunch." Seth muttered. The boy seemed hangry. I'd feel the same way if I'd forgotten my lunch.
"Jane ate my cronuts, so I need that pie." I stated. This was serious business. I'd starve to death otherwise.
A fork appeared in front of me because of my new best friend Seth and together we started digging in.
"A cronut is precious food. You hide precious food from other people." Seth told me with all of his wisdom.
"Huh?" I asked absentmindedly. All of my thoughts and feelings had been solely focused on the piece of pie I'd been eating.
"There's your normal food and there's precious food. If normal food gets stolen, it's not the worst thing but if precious food gets stolen, you're in deep shit. That's why you hide precious food." Seth clarified.
"Is there anything you don't know?" I asked.
"No. I know absolutely everything." He said matter-of-factly.
"Really? Okay, what do you know about Jane?" I continued to ask him. I mainly wanted to know why she didn't want a relationship with Seth but hey, if someone says they know everything, I don't hold back.
Actually, I might've been experiencing a pie high because the words had slipped out before I even knew what I'd asked. I wondered whether I should ask him why science hadn't made unicorns happen yet but I figured I'd take it one question at a time.
