One Day

Chapter Eight

Jenna came to a stop just inside of the town. A few buildings were on fire and some people were laying or sitting in the streets, tending to burn wounds. Jenna could see the Barking Alpha being torn down by the flames. Fear seized her body.
"I'll go back to the palace and send reinforcements; we don't know if they'll come back or not..." Skylar spoke in human form before transforming and run back to the palace. Rowan barked before rushing the streets. He was going to fight off an intruders. Jenna raced over to the wooden tavern. The support beams had caved in on themselves and the wooden frame hadn't been able to take the weight. Jenna ran around the burning building, looking for an entrance. She found a ginger wolf coughing and struggling to stand. He was barking and howling as if calling out.
"Ty!" Jenna barked and quickly rushed over. They both turned into humans and Jenna kneeled down beside him.
"Are you alright?" She asked. Ty gave her a weak nod.
"I think Kayto's still in there..." He whimpered before coughing again "He was right beside me but then..."
Jenna could see the hurt and fear in his eyes.
"He'll be fine; I'll go and get him," Jenna tried to reassure Ty.
"But, you're injured..." Ty pointed to her arm. She had forgot about the bite mark left in her arm after the fight with the two Night Prowlers. Now that she thought about it, it began to sting.
"I'll be okay," Jenna put on a brave face "Go to the front of the building and wait for Skylar to come back with more guards. I'll meet you there with Kayto,"
Ty nodded and went to stand, trembling. He took and few weak steps before limping around the building.
Jenna turned into a wolf, quickly, and used her paws to push some of the wood away from the wreck. She could now fit beneath it and pushed herself through into the space below the caved in beams. She turned into a human once she had been able to get under the tight space.
"Kayto!" She yelled "Where are you?" She tried to follow his scent but all she could smell was ash and burning wood.
"I'm over here!" A shout came from her right side and Jenna followed the sound, ducking below pieces of wood and avoiding the fire. She found Kayto with his leg trapped beneath a wooden beam.
"Keep still; I'll lift it," Jenna told him. She tried furiously to push the piece of wood off of him but it was no use.
"Leave! I'll be alright, just get out!" Kayto pushed Jenna away
"No way! I have to help you," Jenna cried, attempting push the beam off of Kayto's leg. A loud creaking sound was heard as the wooden structure of the building began to give way.
"I'm not breaking my promise!" Kayto yelled "And, I promised to protect you! Now get out!" He almost snarled the words. Jenna shook her head.
"No, not without you..." She sighed "If you died I'd never forgive myself. Anyway, I just told Ty I'd get you out alive and I'm not gonna break my promise either," Jenna turned into a wolf and squeezed her head under the beam so that it rested over her shoulders. Using her entire body, she pushed the beam up high enough for Kayto to pull his leg from underneath it. Jenna dropped the beam and padded back over to Kayto. He too turned into a wolf and they began to navigate their way through the maze of wood and flames. Kayto was limping now, his back leg cut and bruised, possibly even broken. He leaned against Jenna, who lead him through the fire. They came to piece of wood which was thin and fragile. Jenna began to use her paws to smash it apart. Her front leg began to hurt where she had been bitten and she started to feel dizzy because of all the smoke. The wood snapped and she and Kayto slipped through the exit. Her leg was bleeding now and he was finding it hard to walk. She turned back into a human and gripped her wounds to stop it from bleeding. Kayto turned back into a human and Jenna let him lean on her while she lead him back to Ty and Skylar. As soon as Kayto saw him, he shifted back into wolf form and bounded over to him. Ty turned into a wolf and greeted Kayto by nuzzling him and licking him on the nose. He spotted Kayto's limp and they turned back into human. Ty helped Kayto lie down and began inspecting his leg.
"You left these with me," Skylar smiled and past Jenna her father's sword and shield.
"Thanks..." Jenna smiled back and took them. Rowan ran over. He looked shocked.
"The palace was attacked. We need to go back; Dad's...dying," Rowan hung his head. Skylar gave him a look of disbelief.
"Come one, let's go!" Jenna helped Kayto up and Ty helped him limp to the palace. Skylar fell silent for the entire journey. Rowan's purple eye was glowing. Jenna couldn't believe what was happening.
