One Day

Chapter Nine

Jenna felt her heart race as the door to the throne room where opened and she saw King Thorn lying on the floor. His head was propped up against his throne. He was covered in blood and had three stab wounds on his chest and stomach area. Rowan and Skylar went to kneeled down beside him and Jenna sat next to them Kayto stood with Ty beside some of the guards. Rowan growled.
"Who did this to you?" He snarled
"They are gone now, my son," he replied as a guard dragged the bloodied body of a wolf out of the room. "I must crown my heir now, so that they can continue to fight this terrible war,"
Rowan bowed his head in silent and Skylar leaned forward. King Thorn lifted his crown and placed it upon her head.
"Wait, Rowan is the eldest; he's next in line to be King..." Jenna paused "Why is Skylar going to be Queen?"
King Thorn fell silent. He turned to Rowan. Rowan sighed.
"You never asked why my eye became purple," he looked up at Jenna. "It wasn't always like this,"
"What are you talking about?" She asked, in a a confused tone.
"Your necklace... It wasn't cheap. To get something like that I had to go and find a enchanter. They sold necklaces that allowed one to travel to the human world but only at a catch. You must give away the thing you pride yourself on the most. I gave up my place as king so that you could travel to the human world, where I knew you'd be safe. I was left with a permanent remained of my curse, my purple eye..." Rowan explained. Jenna felt a something tug on her heart. She knew that as children all Rowan wanted to be was king. He had trained for years to be strong and patent, brave and loyal. Jenna guessed he had taken the place of Captain of the Royal Guards after he knew he could not become king. He still wanted to be honourable and to be able to fight for his people. Jenna almost felt responsible for him being unable to claim his place as king. Still, she knew Skylar would make a good queen.
"Thank-you, father..." Skylar sat, proudly, the golden crown resting on her head. "I, Skylar Lorfan Jayce, swears to protect her people and bravely defend them until her death," Skylar held her fist up to her heart and bowed her head.
"I'm proud of you, both of you," King Thorn dropped his hand and closed his eyes, falling silent.
Rowan sighed and stood up. Jenna helped Skylar get to her feet and they joined up with Kayto and Ty.
"I'm sorry..." Jenna couldn't quite look at Skylar and Rowan
"You didn't do anything," Rowan shook his head "And, you know how this feels anyway..."
Jenna nodded. Skylar sniffled and tried to compose herself.
"Kayto's leg is severely injured, Jenna's arm has deep bite wounds and Ty has some cuts, bruises and a very small burn," Skylar spoke, loudly. "We should get them some medical attention,"
"Yeah," Rowan nodded "Follow me,"

After Jenna had her arm bandaged and Kayto had his leg put in a cast, they rested for a while. Rowan went to help the guards. Ty and Skylar stayed with Kayto and Jenna. It wasn't long before Rowan came back.
"There's been another attack..." He smashed open the doors. Jenna sighed and stood up.
"I'll go," she told him. Rowan simply nodded.
