So how did Micaela survive the fire? You had to be reading very closely, and even if you were, you may not have understood. The answer to this question was hinted at. Before Micaela revealed herself, the conversation between Alyssa and Vanessa goes like....
"The policemen knew the truth about Micaela," Vanessa told me.
"Okay..."
"It was all an act. Every part of it was. There's something you don't know."
Think about it. The policemen knew the truth....it was all an act. In fact, what happened was that the police knew about Micaela's innocence. They, knowing she should not go to jail, led her away from the police car after setting it on fire. It all looked like an accident, but it actually wasn't. With the car burned, they were not able to find the remains of the humans. They could only assume that they died when no one turned up. In doing this, the policemen caused themselves to not be able to show themselves, but they did it for the sake of justice!
And that, my friends, is what goes on in my head.
