Chapter one
It's the last 30 seconds in the game and I had a clean shot to dribble down the field and take a shot at the goal. The only thing is that if I missed, the game was going to be over and we would lose. 25 seconds to go as I started to drabble the ball down the field a little ways until Nick, one of the players on my team called out.
"Piper, pass it up I'm open." He said a few yards ahead of me. Nick was a 12 year old boy with dark brown hair that was flipped to one side of his face so that it was out of his eyes, which were a golden brown color. Then there was our coach, Mr. Goodrich, a middle aged man in a wheelchair with thinning hair and a beard who also doubled as the mythology teacher when he wasn't on the soccer field making the team run laps for conditioning, yelling at me.
"Pass it Piper you have the perfect opportunity!" Coach yelled from the sideline. Not wanting to get in trouble after the game I passed the ball to Nick and darted in front of him as I made my way towards the goal.
"Run Piper run!" I heard Jason, a boy Nick's age, with blonde hair cut in the same style as Nick's and electric blue eyes that really stood out in the crowd of people in the stands cheering. Hearing my best friend cheering me on from the sidelines made me run even harder then I already was.
"Hey I'm open for a shot!" I called out to Nick as I darted in between two defenders.
Once I called for the ball there wasn't a lot of time to get the ball to me since the two players I had slipped by were closing in. Luckily Nick was fast on his feet and was able to get me the ball just in time for me to plant my foot and give it a nice kick, sending it into the other teams' goal. The referee blew his whistle signaling the end of the game.
"The Blue's take home the final game of the season!" I heard Jason scream as the fans from the stands flocked the field. I ran to his voice and wrapped my arms around him neck. He didn't hesitate to hug me back.
"You're amazing on the field you know that right?" He asked when we let go of each other.
"Well I didn't put her on the team for nothing." I heard Coach Goodrich say from behind me. When I heard him say this it caused me to blush and look at the ground.
"Um... Jason this is my coach, Coach Goodrich. Coach Goodrich this is my best friend Jason." I said introducing them to each other.
"Nice to meet you sir, Piper speaks highly of you." Jason said as they shook hands.
"Really?" Coach asked raising an eyebrow at me.
"Yes sir she does." He replied flashing me a smile, showing off his perfect white teeth.
"Well I was just coming over to see if I may speak to Piper about the report cards that came out today. Since it's the last day of school and we had a game today I still have hers, as well as in the rest of the teams in my office and I was wondering if she could stop by and pick it up." Coach said looking at me.
"Yeah I'll stop by on my way home, but do you mind if I finish celebrating with the guys do you?" I replied.
"Go ahead I'll be in my office when you're ready to leave. Just stop by." He said as he wheeled his wheelchair towards the gate leaving the soccer field.
"Yeah I think I'm going to head home too I don't want old man Smith to get onto me. I'll see you when you get there." Jason said giving me one last hug before he headed home.
Once Jason left, I walked over to the team bench and finished talking and eating oranges with the rest of the team. I sat and talked until everyone but April, a blonde girl my age with brown eyes, had left. Without really saying it we walked and got our report cards together and then we started our route home. Even though I lived in the same apartment complex as April, doesn't mean that I had to hang out with her. I had talked to her a few times and found that she was a nice, caring, and a down to earth girl, but I normally kept a fair distance between myself and the other people in the complex because I knew they couldn't know what my life was like. Only Jason could relate to what I had been through which is why he was my best friend. When we got to the complex we both stopped outside. From the outside the apartment's complex looked like any of the others on the street. It was made of red bricks with a fire escape running the whole height of the building where the windows faced an ally, but the windows were different then the other windows that were on the buildings next to this one. The building that we were looking had all the windows bared shut. Living in that place was like living in a prison.
