Chapter nineteen

"As we grew older we slowly started to fight Smith in our own way. Jason fought him by deliberately doing things that would make him mad. Like stealing from him but leaving no trace he had ever set foot in the office. I'd use actions and words. Stomp around in dirty soccer clothes, back talk or mock him. Eventually he'd get mad enough to lash out at us." I said looking up at her. The entire time I had been talking she had been watching me closely not saying anything and not showing emotion, but now her eyes were slightly larger than normal and her hand was over her mouth.

"You don't mean?" she asked.

"Yea I do. Eventually he got so mad that he'd lash out and hit us. I mean he'd been beating us for years before we decided that it was time to fight back, but there was something about him once we started defying him. He seemed to use more energy in our beatings, like someone had given him an energy drink." I replied.

"So those injuries you had when you came to camp, the black eyes, busted lip and broke arm weren't from fighting?" she asked suddenly. I shook my head.

"I'd tracked mud in the house to gain the black eye and busted lip and when we were trying to escape he closed my fingers in a window." I said looking out at the ocean, not wanting to see her reaction in case it was a look full of pity.

"Piper I had no idea." She said after a long silence.

"I never told you." I replied still looking out at the ocean.

"I know and I'm sorry."

"It's not your fault my parents gave me up. They must not have wanted me seeing as I've lived in a foster home all my life." I replied my voice bitter, just like every other time someone mentioned my parents. I'd learned a long time ago to accept the fact that I must have been unwanted by both my real parents and potential foster parents.

"Don't say that. Maybe they had to. I mean maybe raising a demigod was going to be too much for them." Annabeth suggested.

"What so they hand me over to the most abusive man in the orphanage business?" I asked still sounding bitter.

"Maybe they didn't know. I didn't. From all those news interviews with you and the other kids from your orphanage that place has been made into a heaven."

"Maybe. Wait you've seen the interviews with me in them?" I asked finally looking at her to see a caring and concerned look on her face. Not one of pity. She nodded.

"They air at school in the lunch room sometimes. Most people ignore them but I watch, having nothing better to do." She replied with a shrug.

"Then I take it you know these and my eye color are faked?" I asked pulling my glasses off my face and tossing them onto the sand.

"I guessed but decided not to say anything." She replied smiling. "Thanks. For not saying anything."

"I figured it was your choice, seeing as you're the one who's faking their looks." She replied smiling. I returned the smile without thinking. My smile was immediately whipped off my face when I heard Jason and April call out my name. I got to my feet, grabbing my glasses and sketch book as I did so and made my way towards them as they continued to call my name.
